Is anyone else's sharpening ability highly situational?

I way too dependent on equipment to get a good edge. I went hunting last week and had to sharpen an M390 hunter on the go. I only had a coffee mug and my belt which usually works great for me but I just couldn't get a really hair poppin edge. Maybe its just the high alloy but I was a little disheartened.

The best thing I've found is to bring a 600 grit 1x30 belt with you whenever you hit the trail. Its light, easy to store and works wonders. IMO its much better than a small sharpening stone.

Not for me. Check angle, angle good - apply blade to belt, turn, repeat, check for wire, repeat until wire develops, buff.

Nope definitely not.

Use Sharpie and/or angle cube.
Apex edge both sides
Refine till im happy.

Unless the Earth and the 3rd moon of Jupiter are aligned with Uranus,I don't even think about sharpening knives. Stropping, yes. Sharpening, not in a million years .....or the next alignment :D OK,back to being serious. Yes, I have good and bad days for sharpening. Sometimes it depends on how much coffee I had,too much and it is better for me to wait till another day.

Are you not aware that they changed the name of Uranus???

Op, didn't you leave BF a while back? Got a job, moved, all that? Maybe it was someone else.

In any case, if it was you, welcome back. :)

As for your question... No, my ability doesn't seem to falter on any given day. What *does* differ is my level of patience. On days when I start to feel frustrated quickly I'll mark on the steel rod where I was at, put my kit away then come back to it later. That more than anything seems to improve the quality of my edge.

Aye - I foolishly thought I could force myself to be done with new knives. That monkey could only be caged for do long, as I began to find knives I didn't carry as much as I thought I would and began seeking alternatives. My endless quest continues.

Very well. :)

I actually know exactly where you're coming from. I doubt I'll ever put knives down again. In my case, the trick is to not over do it.
