Is Benchmade losing their edge?

Yep, you're saying the same drivel that lost this argument the last time around.

The hole is functional on folders--no trademark protection.

The hole only now appears on late model fixed blades to obscure the inconvenient truth about the TM prospects for the hole after the patent on it expired.

Oh, and name another trademark that is allowed to be used by its direct competitors. Name just one other such trademark in any other field of business if you can.

Are you saying Sal Glesser and Spyderco are liars and they never had a trademark for the "hole"?

A patent is not a trademark.

benchmade makes OTFs, autos, several different balis

Well, this is the one part I kinda have to chime in on. Benchmade used to make several different Balis. Heck just the 4X series alone is a pretty wide spectrum, but let's face it, every single one is a clone of the others, with a different blade. I'm tired of seeing the same handles.

The Morpho was a breath of fresh air, and one of the most innovative Balis released in a long time. If they continue on that route, I'll be happy. But I'm not interested in a 42 with a different blade anymore. It's just not worth it for me.

Let's see, ever heard of a trademark that serves a function? IIRC, if it provides a definite advantage over any other device on the market, then it can't be trademarked. I seem to recall a certain car grille being trademarked, Jeep's seven bar grille for instance. You can't seriously tell me that a car grille has no function. However, it does not provide an advantage. And, as BM has said in the past, their oval hole was superior to Spyderco's round one, so that argument is moot. As for using other shaped holes, we don't care!

BTW, the patent has already expired. Go read up on it. While you're at it, check the trademark on it.

And as for the trademark being used on other competitors, it's their trademark, they can license it out if they want to. In fact, they did with several companies, but pulled it because of a certain company not attributing it correctly. No points for guessing who:rolleyes:.

zzzz  I have a strong feeling of déjà vu...and not of the Bob Lum kind.

I wonder if the 555HG Mini Grips that I ordered from NGK will arrive today.

Well, something both parties can agree on. Neither side isn't going to back down.

Ya' know, I never intended on this thread to be a "BM vs. whoever" thread. Everybody has their favorites, so whatever. As I've said a billion times in this thread, I posed the question because I AM a Benchmade fan, but it seems like over the last couple of years they've had less and less that has appealed to me, and this year I found myself not interested in any of their new releases. As stated before, the only knives in their new catalog that interest me are the Skirmish & Rukus (which aren't new). Other than that, I already own the ones I like.

For crying out loud, it all boils down to this.....would ANY OF YOU turn down a Benchmade or Spyderco knife if someone gave it to you? I think not. That tells you the merits of both.

Surely it must be possible to have a discussion about a Benchmade question, that does not include a Spyderco / Benchmade argument?

and vice versa?

Well, Sal....I don't know. Is it possible to talk about Republicans without talking about Democrats? Maybe, but it seldom - if ever - happens.

:)

I'm thinking about taking my BM Emerson 975's thumbstud off, drilling out the hole with a 3/8" bit, and smoothing the edges.

Naw....maybe not.

Hey, some people like to drive a 2007 Ferrari and some people like to drive a 1985 tercel wagon.

Some people use the right tool for the job and don't give two hoots about what morons think; some obsess over jewelry.

It's the difference between those who do, and those who spew.

Some people buy knives to use, and some buy them to stare at. Luckily, Benchmade offer knives that are very functional, while being nice to look at. These aesthetic features, however, are useless and add to cost, and 80% of the time, I'm the kind of person that will spend the extra money on performance over flare. Generalize my position into an insult if you must.

Also if the 690 is such a useless knife, ill gladly pay you $50 for it, or even trade a sharpmaker for it.:D
I never called it a useless knife, I called it a knife with many useless features, and it is. That being said, I very much like the knife, it just never beats my real workers into my pockets.

My point was that to call BM straightforward user and Spydercos flashy is an extremely backwards statement.

I live less than 1 mile from them and collected/sold something like 100 of their knives.... I got bored and lost interest. I thought their Rukus was different... but they need to do something other than repeat and copy. Plus their move away from limited editions and more gold class stuff is a mistake.

Is there a common sense about how we would describe, what BM is actually doing?

More likely what BM is NOT doing? IMO they don't put enough effort into the business (=their knives) (compare with Spyderco's sprint runs, Citadel prototype etc. and Spyderco is not alone, Kershaw is doing alike), it seems to me more like inertial movement than anything else :(

Looking at my business, if ppl. would talk about what i am not doing instead of what i am actually doing for them.....

As i said before, they expand there lines, change models quickly, pushing the "cheapy" market with good products but loose profile, which came from models like AFCK, Griptilian or 710, the autos and balis, all in all manufactured but close to custom made.
