is carbon fiber spyderco military strong enough for self defense?

If the liner locks produced by the major brand names today aren't strong enough, then no folder will do. You need a fixed blade.

Carbon fiber is very strong, used in many aircraft applications where strength and light weight are essential.

Put on your kevlar/spectra gloves and go stab a tree with the Military.
It works just fine.
If it can take stabbing a tree, I'm pretty sure it will handle any normal SD uses.
Just don't try knocking any dogs/people out with the spine of the knife.

The Carbon Fiber Military is more than strong enough for self-defense.
Keep in mind that folks have been using much weaker constructed knives for self-defense for centuries.

People shouldn't hate Pit Bulls, they should hate their owners...I have a Veterinarian in the family, and she insists that Pit Bulls are one of the absolute best breeds for training and having with a family, etc.; the ones that give the breed the bad name are the ones who are abused, poorly kept, trained to fight, and owned by A) thugs, or B) white trash...hate the owner, not the breed :)

Amen! The idiot media, and people who are dog racists promote this statistically untrue lie. Not that people on average tend to let the facts determine their outlook, but...
http://www.atts.org/stats1.html
Compare the APBT stats to numerous other breeds.
They are big, muscular, and associated with street trash, and as such suffer discrimination by proxy. Yes, PBs have killed, yes, they have bitten babies, and mauled senior citizens, but so have other breeds.

I agree and have nothing against Pit-bulls

It's just a sad truth that street trash thugs favor this breed

Just placed my order.

Thanks for everything.

PS: I ordered 2-day shipping, so I hope it gets here before my next knife fight or zombie attack.

I have the CF S90V and the G10 S30V Millies. Great knives!

I too put my kevlar gloves on, just to be safe. I went out in the back yard and stabbed my poor tree, again (I use this tree to test all of my locking folders) and I am a pretty big guy, the lock held. The milli is a damn fine and strong knife. I wouldn't feel at a disadvantage with this knife in a tough situation. That said, I prefer my Smith M28 .357 when I go to a knife fight :)

Years back it was German Shepard's, before that it was Dobermans, sometimes it's Rotties. Any big powerful breed requires responsible owners to control them properly. 6 yrs ago I got my first Pit, a 8wk old female. Let me tell you I was raised that our dogs were part of the family. They sleep inside, taken for regular walks, get to go for truck rides, camping, they are involved in our whole family life. I was a little leery about getting this breed. Over time this dog has totally proven what the definition of loyalty is. Not to just me but the whole family, including our other pets. This dog was raised by a 20lbs male alley cat, and they sleep together in the same recliner, eat each others food, play with each other. The dog watches over my kids, lets other kids play with her under adult supervision. Not once in 6 years has she not acted appropriately. Including the time she alerted when someone was in the backyard trying to break into my truck. She is no meek or mild dog at 85lbs but she is no uncontrollable brute either. Very smart, Very Loyal. Anyway didn't mean to get off topic, I just can't stand when people contribute to the bad press.

I've had my Siberian husky scare the bejesus out of the neighbors. It's not uncommon for people to be scared of dogs with no practical reason.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, including Pits. I own a Black Lab

I'm just saying after being attacked by a dog, I will always be ready if it happens again.

Some unlucky dog is going to have a real bad day if it attacks me

I EDC a waved Endura or a ParaMilitary on days I'm not working

I couldn't agree with you more...I don't care what breed attacks me, it's getting a face full of griptilian!

I just received a G10 Military about a week or so ago. As an owner of the Benchmade AFCK, TSEK, Police, etc. I can attest to the fact that everything you have been hearing about them is correct-it is certainly a very well made knife and one of Spydercos (or anyone elses for that matter) best. I was surprised by the size of it coupled with how light weight it is. Yet, it doesn't feel cheap at all. I'd have no worries getting one in carbon fiber (as it seems you already have).

I'd also like to toss out a word on it's liner lock and liner locks in general.

How is it that tactical knives made by people with years (and sometimes decades) of experience utilizing liner locks are unsafe? Where exactly does this wisdom and experience come from that declares this to be so? Apart from the internet that is? Let's see a show of hands eh? Who here has had a liner lock fail them in a KNIFE FIGHT? Hmmm....

Guys who have been in knife fights, teach knifefighting tactics, Navy Seals and Spec. Forces, design, manufacture or make knives for a living put these liner lock knives out there. Are we to believe they *want* people to cut their fingers off? Have you ever seen a knife-fighter who was missing fingers?

Just curious. Oh, pics would be great!

:D

Probably only when they spine whacked tested the knife on the assailant's forehead ;)

I can't even imagine how brutal that blade would be on flesh! Especially with that massive handle design, you could get some major slash and stab going.

Don't want to think about it and would hate to explain that one to the judge.

But yes, the liner is one of the strongest liner locks in existence in my opinion.

That Harvard grad student Alexander Pring Wilson sure had a hard time explaining it to the jury who convicted him of manslaughter in 2003. He used a Spyderco Military knife to defend himself. He made the mistake of calling police and turning himself in. He would in all likelyhood have not been caught if he had not turned himself in. He should have changed his clothes, thrown the knife in the Charles River, nearbye, and wrapped the clothing with a brick and thrown them in too. He never would have been caught or in any trouble. I guess he wasn't that smart after all.

He sure hurt that kid but good! The bad guy who accosted him was a drug dealer, scumbag anyway. No great loss.
