Is CarbonFiber material of the future?... perhaps sure yes!

Lets get this back on track gearheads. My Benchmade 941D2CF is the coolest variant of the five versions of the 941 I've owned, including the 941Ti-01. If I had the extra cash, I'd buy the one for sale in the exchange right now as a back up in case anything happens to the one I already have.

At a recent USN lunch, the 941D2CF was the most commented on knife of the twelve I brought. Carbon Fiber is just plain cool, eve if it's now old school in mfg. .

I just arranged to buy a 5/8 thick 4x8 piece to make something out of. CF & Ti is cooler than silver and gold. Imagine a Carbon Fiber Seamaster Pro!

Oh, forgot the say, the source for the above information is Road&Track. The best of the big car magazines IMHO. I have performance figures for the McLaren F1 as well if anyone is interested:

Top speed is phenominal and accelaration isn't that far down from the Porsche or Ferrari, but you can see in terms of braking and handling it's not even in the same league as the newer cars. Lets put it this way... a Dodge Neon SRT-4 has a slight edge on the McLaren F1 in handling and braking. That Neon price as tested: $19,995. :D

Cars are not numbers. Period. If you seriously think you can compare a couple numbers and declare a car better, you'd better stop reading magazines and start driving. I won't even dignify the absolute stupidity of the last two sentences with a response.

Dirk, and the Mclaren F1 was a failure as a race car? Are you on crack? Lets see, in its first year racing, it placed 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 13th at Le Mans. Quite a failure indeed...

The McLaren F1 was an amazing achievement at the time and is still in many eyes, the undisputed champion of street cars.

Back to the subject matter, composites are definitely the wave of the future. However, I don't see all ships going to composite. Especially war time vessels. I can't see fixing a hole caused by a torpedo blast to be easy with a composite ship. Perhaps a 'composite' of carbon fiber with a metal alloy backing. Materials science is definitely cool.

I do drive, though maybe not as well as I would like. ;)

I disagree about cars not being numbers. Given the same driver is testing two cars, the numbers play a large roll. Certainly the driver may feel more comfortable in one car or the other and therefore perform better in one, but not by such a wide gap. The Enzo, simply put, is faster in every way then the McLaren F1 except top speed. It has a higher level of acceleration, and a much better suspension set-up and braking system. If we are speaking in terms of performance, then yes, I beleive the Enzo to be a better car. In terms of syling, definately not.

The last two sentences of my post were meant as a joke friend. It is obvious the McLaren F1 is quite faster then a Neon SRT-4. It IS true though, that it out brakes and out handles the McLaren by a hair...but it could not even compete with the McLaren on a track. That said, handling and braking is not exactly the McLaren's strong point.

I think you need to take a step back Mark, and ask yourself why you are getting so upset over a friendly car discussion. Life isn't that serious. :)

Carbon Fiber and other composites absorb radar. The B-2 and F-117 and F-22 are made from composites. The boat in that picture looks like a concept of a "stealth boat".

Yeah, she specifically said it was a stealth boat. Does a stealth boat need to absorb radar, or sonar? Will CF absord both?
Why does CF absorb radar, anyway?

Only metals reflect radar. During WWII PT boats were made of plywood for stealth, but there's a limit to how big a boat you can make out of wood before it starts to sag in the middle....

Minjin- I didn't say failure, I said disappointment for the price. Many teams didn't want to touch the car for what it cost without any development on the teams part. Then tack on the cost of development for the team. LeMans teams don't have quite the backing of F-1 teams. The McLaren F-1 didn't last very long as race car either. I wasn't saying it was a bad car. In fact, it still sits as one of my personal favorites.

There's nothing wrong with "magazine" racing. Most people understand it is a comparison based on a limited amount of information. The mere fact that switching tires on one of the cars can change the results for the better or worse is just an example. The odds are not in my favor to drive one of these cars. So, I enjoy them through the numbers.
