Is Cutco A Scam Please Tell Me

striker,
Of course I can admit that and it's very high. But at the same time, none of that matters once you've gotten past the beggining stages (friends and family) and are making nice money. If you start, suck.. quit / get ripped off you'll get mad. But if you make it there, when you sell a Homemaker (which is $805, not $636. He had the names wrong) and you're bringing home half of what you sell you just made $400 in one hour. Who's going to complain about that? Sure I think the way they brainwashed the new guys was wrong, but that's how businesses work. I don't think they're business practices are right, but I'm certainly not mad at the company - which is why I believe from my own personal experiance all the people that "bash" vector are just PO'ed ex employees that couldn't cut it and got ripped off because of it. Not because "I noticed the excuse about them being bad at their jobs is Vector Marketing company script and they repeat it over and over to get this ingrained into their reps." They never once mentioned it. You think they're going to let new guys know that ex employees are bashing the company and where to go to find out all the stuff management doesn't want them to know? Doubt it.

But hey, I'm not saying I'm right. This is just my opinion based on what I've seen and heard dealing with these things in real life, not just what I've read.

Couldn't agree more. This kind of marketing is despicable, in my book. Convincing folks to sell their friends and relatives $600-800 worth of knives, which not one in a thousand will make good use of is very low down(I love knives and have a ton of good kitchen knives, but use about 3 of them, 95% of the time). Not even considering the fact that the knives might be actually worth half that much (maybe).

Any company that encourages and manipulates mostly young, impressionable people, usually short on life experience, should be subject to having their company headquarters approached after dark by frightened townspeople, with torches and pitchforks. Just my 2 cents. YMMV. :p :D :barf:

Sounds like they borrow heavily from the Cold Steel catalog.

Maybe they can make a "Proof" DVD. "Watch as our Cutco knife can be stabbed through a car door." or "There can be only one- Busse claims to make the toughest knives, but watch as we compare the toughness of a Busse to a good knife like Cutco." :D

It seems, though, that these marketing ploys are very, very effective. There was always a crowd around a certain DVD showing at Blade.

I have a set of Cutco knives and have used them in the kitchen as my master set of knives. I got them 12 years ago and just sent them off for resharpening a few months back. Cost $8 for the return postage and they all came back nice and sharp.

Now, are there better steels out there?
YES

Are there less expensive knives that cut better?
YES

Are their selling techniques unprofessional?
YES

This has been debated many, many times here but I think they reason they use 440A steel is that it stamps fairly easily and makes for faster production.

440C is a better cutlery steel, IMHO, and there are even better steels. David Boye swears by his cast dendritic steel for kitchen knives - and that's neither stamped nor forged.

Basically, there is no "best" steel out there. It's just a matter of picking the ones most appropriate to the task - and even that can be debated.

Is there such a thing as the "best car"?

Now you can see why such claims are so ridiculous...

CUTmynutsCO,

Welcome to Bladeforums! :D

Many people haved turned to bladeforums to have their questions answered - this is a great place to hang out and learn knife stuff.

Stick around a while before you make any rash decisions - though, your decision to quit CutCo was certainly a courageous one. The sales managers are like the Death Eaters of Harry Potter fame... yikes!

Chances are they'll hound you for another week...or month. But they'll give up when the new batch of gullible teens shows up on their step ready to sacrifice familial relations for the cause.

There are many of us who were in your footsteps many years ago - and who have thankfully all moved on. You're not alone.

Best wishes,

Dan

Bwhahaha, that's every company from softdrinks to cerial to toys to cars ....

don't forget amusement parks and fast food joints...

Oh and a few overseas knife manufacturing companies too...

I cannot imagine myself paying hundreds of dollars for a set of kitchen knives. For about 150 you can have a pretty good0111(my cat tried to type here)set of knives that will last a long time.

It reminds me of the Kirby vacuum sweeper and their 1400? dollar machine. Why pay that kind of money when a Hoover for 150 will do the same thing??

I tried my hand at Amway Products back when they only sold soap and cleaning products, not like now where they have electronics and furniture and who knows what else. I studied the product, bought samples, tested them against OTC stuff from the grocery store. My end resultsshowed that here were some good items but nothing that would be enough to convince me to pay more money and still have to mix the product in another container. In an area where there were literally hundreds and even thousands of stores and specialty places like janitorial stores, why would "Jane Housewife" spend extra dollars when the products were already available and good to go.

I am involved in the sale of a product right now that is the sole sales item for the company. It is a fantastic product and I benefitted physically from it by the second day I started taking it. It is so much easier to deal with one thing and it does not cost an arm and a leg either.

it's one of them cold, rainy, blah kinda days here in Alaska...I could use a Cutco salesperson to entertain me for awhile....

The best cutlery steel out there?? really?? Lifetime warranty???

Gee...I wonder if I should sell off these no name Fisks, Mayos, and Reeve knives ta' replace them with Cutco.....and I thought that S30V stuff was really good steel... wish they'd told me that stuff was inferior to 440A....

Or you could go to your local manager's office and embarrass him in front of his potential recruits

Alaska huh? There is so much open country up there they would never find the body. Oops, you probably weren't talking about that kind of entertainment.

Nah....ain' no one in the world ever made me that angry before...Well...actually, there was one guy, but by the time I got done runnin' my mouth, an' tellin' the world just how the gent would meet his demise I had drawn a line straight to myself, so...I had to settle for making his life miserable in other ways....

awww...damn....how do ya' make that disappearin' smiley face??

I bought a Cutco today from a friends son, who is going to college. They are WAY overpriced, they use a middle man in the marketing, and there steel is nothing to be thrilled about. I emailed Cutco to find the alloy content of their "high carbon stainless steel" and they replied that it is 440 stainless with a RC hardness of 55-57. I believe that most of you are correct about Cutco and I even told my friends son all of the negative things. He didn't care though. He was just glad to be making money. :(

I just read through about half of this thread and I'll cut to the chase. If you buy a Cutco knife, you aren't too clever. If you take a job selling knives for Cutco, you aren't too clever.
