i dont know if it is or not, i've heard some knife makes say its really tough, even Jay Fisher says its hard and tough, but i've heard some people say its not very tough and its just kinda rust resistant, so what are your opinions of it? im thinking about using it down the road for some tactical knives so i need to know if its good or not,

Not particularly, no. If you like D2's edge-holding and resistance to staining but also need a very tough steel with much finer grain, CPM-3V is the way to go.

Its a good steel if you deal with the amount of RA it has with the industry standard heat treat. That is don't use the industry standard heat treat for a D2 knife blade..Not overly tough but it will cut for a very long time if done right..

D2 can have exceptional edge retention in many applications, but it isn't tough in the sense of energy absorbed in fracture. In a practical sense you can make a knife in D2 that will do something like cleave a nail better than a blade made in most stainless steels. It's strong and abrasion resistant and tougher in use than most stainless. But no, it isn't particularly tough. 3V is a better steel in applications showing chipping and cracking.
