Is ESEE's kydex not good enough?

I'm just curious as to why many people are getting custom kydex sheaths when many come with them from ESEE.
I will say that I about had a major accident today and it was related to the ESEEE kydex sheath. I was trying to pull my RC-3 out of the kydex sheath today, which was attached to my Maxpedition bag and I started to pull it out the opposite way it was meant to be. If I didn't happen to look down I would not have realized that the blade was about to cut my finger fairly bad I was using that finger as leverage to pull the knife out.

well the ESEE3 has a plastic sheath not kydex.

i have multiple sheaths for my ESEE's because i want options. for example my izula has 3 sheaths, a dedicated belt, neck, and MOLLE sheath. and my ESEE3 has two sheaths. really it comes down to preference.

with your sheath it could have loosened over time. it might be worth investing in a kydex sheath.

Personally I find nothing wrong with the sheaths provided from ESEE.

I'd say it is probably that people want mods on their sheaths such as belt specific carry, boot clips or intergrated fire steel loops without modifying the original sheath.

I'm getting a new kydex for my IZULA because I want a different color with a belt clip and firesteel loop integrated. Other than that the current sheath suits me fine for neck carry.

why do people buy motorcycles and throw away perfectly good parts?

Just cuz.

I kept the RC-4 sheath but replaced the (plastic) sheath of the Izula because being as big as it is detracts from the benefit of the knife's size, especially for neck carry (plus Hoopster's sheaths are so pretty :p).

I have 2 sheaths for both my izulas.
This way I can carry the knife on various gear with having to remove the sheath.
I like to keep things modular.

IMO the ESEE plastic molded sheaths function perfectly. The only reason I would get a replacement (which I haven't done yet) would be to upgrade the looks of the sheath. As far as function they deliver. YMMV of course.

the Izula's plastic sheath seems nice, but it's a "one model does it all" compromise. for neck ir pocket carry, a trimmer kydex sheath might be a nice thing to have.

the other sheaths seem decent. certainly much better than the offerings from CS.

i haven't seen a pic of the HEST sheath yet.

but you can't please all of the people all of the time, so there are options. life is good.

There is nothing wrong with them at all. I prefer them, myself. They are better then most if not all other manufacturers. However, with that said, a sheath is special just like a knife to many people. Some people like to customize the knife in some way. And since a lot of people feel the knife is perfect, they get a custom sheath instead of modding the knife.

I love the sheaths that come with the IZULA, RC-4 and RC-5, but, RC-3 and RC-6 are not to my liking. I'm getting used to the 3, and the 6 is strapped onto my backpack, so, it is not really an issue. I do wish all were Kydex though.

Who would you recommend to make a Kydex sheath? I saw some mention of a couple of names but that means nothing to me without a link or a name since I am somewhat new to ESEE.

I wouldn't mind seeing a kydex sheath photo thread. The two knives I have at present (RC-3MIL and Izula) have the molded sheaths. I'm very happy with the RC-3 sheath with Molle Back, but I'm thinking about getting a kydex sheath for the Izula for pocket carry.

Shotgunner11 does pretty nice ones if you're looking for in-house. I have a couple of his izula sheaths.

I got to see some of Shotgunners at Blade. I would highly recommend them.

In fact...one of these days, if he ever slows down, he is going to make me some!

I have the HEST kydex and RC3 molded plastic, both of which sound like a baby rattle on the trail because after using 3 times they loosen up so much they don't retain the blade anymore. I'm done with plastic sheaths in general-either Cordura/canvas or leather for me. I shouldn't have to heat and press my knife sheath after a day of EDCing.

really? i haven't had a single issue with either of my rc-3 sheaths, and i've EDC'd both of 'em. my izula is still riding in its original sheath after about a year, and still has great retention. carried daily, and used more than my boxcutter at work...

Ive carried the Izula and RC3 a LOT...with no issues with retention, whatsoever.

When you say "EDC", do you mean "dip in a pot of boiling water"? I cannot see how simple carrying could loosen up any of the sheaths to the point of not retaining the knife at all anymore.

As for the rattle, yes plastic sheaths can rattle a small amount. What, are you trying to sneak up on a bear because they are easier to kill with an RC3 when they dont know you are coming?
