Is Fallkniven S1 Forest Knife worth 3x more $$ than BM Rant?

Thanks for posting the pics...it definitely does look like a solid knife; it's become increasingly clear that another $80 might not be justified...for what it's going to be used for, I don't foresee any issues with it not "holding up," so thanks folks...if anyone has more info, keep on posting!

Go for the Benchmade. DOn't spend the extra money. As long as you don't insanely abuse it, htere is no real reason you'll be breaking it.

I have the S1 and recommend it over just about any other commercially produced fixed blades. RAT & Ontario are ok but I stay with my Falkniven U2, P folder & S1.

I have both. If I were picking one to dress and skin a deer close to home I would choose the Rant because of the shorter blade and the dropped point style. The Rant is quite a bargain for a US made knife.

If I were spending a month on the Appalachian Trail or in the Bob Marshall Wilderness I would pick the S1 because of the toughness of the laminated blade and the extra length that might be useful for batoning or other hard use chores.

Would I feel unprepared with the Rant? Not at all, but the extra cost of the Fallkniven does actually buy something extra in terms of ultimate performance.

Honestly....does it help to just throw more brands and knives at him to consider when he's already chose two knives that he wants to see the differences off?

I'd go with a Fallkniven F1 3 3/4 inch flat ground blade if I were you. Otherwise if don't mind Carbon steel check out the Ka-bar made Becker Campanion (it's a 5 inch blade) for like 60-70 bucks.

Order a Blind Horse Knives workhorse model. They are top notch and tougher than about anything made. Survival instructors in the know recommend them. They are a no nonsense working man's knife. Fallknivens are nice but are production made in Japan. BHK's are made one at a time by two American craftsman. Check out their site www.blindhorseknives.com. I own four and have another on order. They are also an great value for a custom made knife.

Both knives you are considering will serve you well. I own a flat grind S1 (Dan Koster). I'd see nothing wrong with owning one of the current Rants. I actually prefer the handle design of the Rant.

The Rant does feel very good in the hand when compared to the Fallky, but I think that the Fallky's thermorun is of a higher quality than the material used on the Rant.

It never fails that when somebody asks whether to buy A or B that people chime in with suggestions from C to Z. I'm surprised somebody hasn't recommended a Sebenza yet.

The F1 uses VG10 - great steel. I have a kitchen knife in this stuff, and it holds an edge.
If you do a search on the web, you can find a place with a good price - not that much more than the Rant.
