Is FSH a tactical fighter or survival knife?

I just thought of this. If your out in the woods or something wouldn't it make more sense if you have a big knife to have it in a sheath that straps to your back? This will eliminate the sheath from swinging and it would leave room on your belt for a small fixed blade.

If you can carry and conceal a FSH, then certainly you can carry and conceal a firearm, even a serious piece of steel like a full size 1911.
As I sit here and think about it, I am never in a scenario away from home where I would have my FSH but not have my KAHR K9 or something larger near at hand (except maybe in the exhibition hall at the Blade show, or in a gun show where you must leave your ammo at the door.)

Any self defense scenario I can imagine where you would be justified in using a knife against another person is a scenario where use of a firearm would also be justified, and using the gun would probably be easier to defend in court.

Maybe there are jurisdictions where you can legally carry a FSH but not a firearm, but it's hard to imagine. The FSH is what it is, a superb hard use, multipurpose blade.

The Busse that I most associate with self defense is the original Mean Street.
If my feeble old fart memory is not failing me, when it was introduced, it was marketed as a concealable, thick, brutally strong blade that would not fail when encountering bone, various clothing items, etc. IMO a much more practical defensive carry than any SH.

Hey, I just remembered one scenario where the knife might be equal to the gun. A friend of mine who is a prosecutor once told me of getting on a small elevator in a courthouse and as the doors closed realizing that a huge man whom he had once successfully prosecuted, and had received death threats from, had boarded the elevator behind him. He told of standing there helpless, wondering if the guy was going to suddenly attack him or not. Said it seemed like the longest elevator ride he ever took. Maybe in this situation when there is no way to retreat from close arms length, a knife would be as good as a gun. I don't know.

What are you talking about? This thread has me scared. Can't we talk about something happy like PBJ sandwiches or winning the Lotto or bags of Pork rines or something.

;) :D

Well, I do use my HOFSH for spreading PBJ. The blade is so wide it works great. But, sometimes the weight of the blade prematurely cuts the bread before I want it to.

I have to agree with a lot that has been said. All have been very good points. Large and small knives have been put to the test in fighting. Whether they are broad swords, dirks, daggers, or straight edge razors. I'm a firm believer that anything is a weapon if used that way!

If I'm out in the woods I'd much rather have a bigger knife such as the FSH. It serves many purposes and most assuredly one of those could be a weapon. Now if I'm out roaming the streets of San Francisco, I think I would rather have my Meaner Street with me than my FSH. The quarters can be close and the ability to heft and swing can be limited. Having a fast knife can be beneficial. Quick jabs and slicing would more than likely be the rule. A friend of mine recently took a knife fighting class and the instructor requested that the students come with smaller fixed blades or folders. No one there had anything much over 8".

This is all IMHO. I have never been nor ever wish to be in a knife fight. The instructor at the class I mentioned above said that the statistics for walking away from a knife fight are much less than a gun fight. Something like 80 percent of people in a knife fight die or are seriously injured to something like 30 percent in a gun fight. Not sure if this is because both people get hurt in most knife fights and gun fights stop after one shot and the other person is dead or unable to continue, while the other person is left standing to explain to the police? Depending on the situation, I'd much rather keep my knife in my sheath and hand over my wallet. I can always get a new wallet! A spline, kidney, or other vital organ are much harder to come by.

My 2 cents... for what ever it's worth.

Well you could also reverse the situation to help give you an answer. If you were going to be attacked by someone with a knife, what kind would you prefer to defend against. Ofcourse the answer is none but just play along. What kind would you least want to defend against? What kind by someone trained, someone not trained? What kind if you don't have a knife? What kind if you do?

Ofcouse in the real world you won't be able to choose what your attacker has but the answers to these questions have to mean something.

I prefer to defend myself against a potential knife wielding attacker with a firearm, preferably a rifle if I absolutely have to. The point has already been made above that if you are able to carry a FSH you would also probably be able to carry a pistol. It takes a great deal of skill to become proficient with a knife, and most don't have it, me included. That being said, knives scare the heck out of me and I'm not willing to play the odds when I don't need to.
