Really?

Yeah, but you can use the right tool, wrongly. So an expert uses the right tool expertly.

Yep. Paid actor. Good actor, though he pigeonholed himself into one specific role

He wasn't originally an actor. he was hired for full metal jacket as a consultant on boot camp. they liked him so much they cast him as Sgt Hartman. He became an actor after that.

Funny, the story I heard was he was the one giving the military style haircuts and that he had such a strong military demeanor they gave him a part.

Edit: I'm not disagreeing with you, just think it is funny how stories change as they spread. I looked it up and yours appears to be the correct one.

Well I've met the gunny, n I'm shure that someone misquoted him. I think its supposed to be the other way around. The gunnys a pretty smart cookie!

yeah i have met him in person too, he is TALL! and a very nice guy, he is also a spokesman for glock so it could always be worse, ;)

It's BS.

We've all seen skiers, hunters, back packers... you name it, who had fancy equipment and were clueless about how to use it correctly.

"tool are your friends, learn how to use them"
We offer a advanced mechanic course at work and this was written on the board heading into the class room. by the end of the first day someone had changed it to
"your friends are tools, learn how to use them"

Would you expect that paid spokesman for a company selling tools to say something different? He's selling knives, not knowledge.

i found my info on IMDB. wikipedia confirms he was hired as a technical advisor and kubric cast him later on. however i was incorrect about that being his first acting roll. he was in The Boys in Company "C", Apocalypse Now and Purple Hearts, before Full Metal Jacket.

He's also only an honorary Gunnery Sergeant. He retired as a Staff Sergeant.

I still think he's a pretty awesome person.

I was really disapointed when I saw the new column in TK this month. The Gunny is an entertaining character and makes a great TV host. That does not translate to print, though. I found his column neither informative nor amusing. In fact, IMO it was a waste of space and I hope it gets dropped soon and replaced with something good. :thumbdn:

Yes, he is on the money. he's a paid spokesman after all.

Exactly correct, Mr. Freedoom.

He's on-the-money alright... it just depends on whose money you're talking about.

Good tools are important, yes. But I am reminded of the old adage about the odds of a monkey left alone in a room with a typewritter producing a great novel. Upgrading the typewritter isn't going to help. On the other hand, I'm reminded of the famous picture of Hemingway working at his favorite old manual Royal portable... no spelling correction or anything and yet he seemed to do alright with it.

Good tools are important, yes. But a monkey left alone in a room with Microsoft Word is unlikely to produce.... wait a minute, ANYONE left alone in a room with Microsoft Word is likely to produce the blue screen of death. Well, you get the point.
