Is honing your knives something you really enjoy?

I gotta say, I enjoy the short time I spend keeping my blades sharp. How about you? Here's a pic to hopefully motivate you to post a similar pic.

This should probably be in MT&E....but yes I do hone my knives A LOT!

I'll put a pic up at some point tonight!

I enjoy sharpening mine as well. All to a nice hair popping edge from a 320 girt stone. DM

I enjoy it still, but I've lately been trying to streamline the process. I've cut it down to 2 steps and can get a hair whittling edge on most of my knives. Some just don't cooperate. Those I don't enjoy.

I'm not sure if i enjoy it or if it's an addiction yet. I do know I like sharpening my knives more than I like owning knives.

Like working on my car, I honestly don't enjoy, but I'm always willing to do it. More than anything I am happy I did it myself, I get to stressed out working on stuff at times.

+1 I gain more enjoyment by sharpening and tinkering with them than actually using or owning all of them. I do enjoy owning them, just not as much as sharpening them.

Blessings,

I feel uneasy when I've used a knife and left it un touched up to hair popping. I just think "what if someone came to my house and checked my knives for sharpness, I would be embarrassed".

Lately I've been using them for cutting stuff around concrete and flooring so they get dull pretty fast. I tried using some cheap ducks unlimited knife in most likely 440a to cut up carpet and padding, and it held up surprisingly well. I probably did 120+ feet of cutting the 20 year old concrete dust embedded carpet and the blade BARELY cut paper after, when before it was hair popping.

No.

I realize that's heresy around here, but the fun and novelty of sharpening knives wore off a lonnnnng time ago for me. I enjoy using knives much, much more.

In a word? Absolutely! I'm also one who enjoys sharpening more than using. I especially like carbon steel knives with thin bevels. Too easy to get an insane edge on. Now s30v I hate...

It's therapy. Even if I'm not using a knife much, I'll strop whatever I'm carrying several times a week just for the "feel" and the knife/blade contact. I have a bare leather strop that I use when I don't want to do much to the edge other than straighten it a bit and have some "quality time" with it.

It's not something I just enjoy, it's an obsession! Nothing worse and more useless than a dull knife. I hone or strop my knives after each use (not enough to remove much steel, just to keep them sharp). I think I've more hones, strops, emory sticks, etc than I do knives (well, not really :-). Have only been collecting knives for about 60 years and sharpening them for only 59.5 years.

Maybe your just not getting them sharp enough :)

Oh, I think I have a pretty good idea about how to get 'em sharp ;) This is an independent, unedited review of what I consider to be a working edge.

Sharpening and honing is just part of my job. The results are the fun part.

LOL. That is a mighty tool in that video...the knife seems nice too;)

I enjoy profiling, honing, polishing, and finishing edges on some knives and not so much on others.

I think I am with James though...when it's a job it's not as much fun....but every once in a while a special piece comes along and I enjoy working it and bringing out something special in the way of performance. It is a satisfying feeling.

Awesome video James. I am just rotating through my users, cause I really do not feel like sharpening them right now. I seem to have lost my touch too. I bet I need to clean up my stones, and start with some less harder steels. D2 takes an eternity to sharpen. I should order some new belts for my belt sander 1x42. At least it will get me sharp again.

I myself enjoy the sharpening process...sometimes. Bench stones that work slow are therauptic, but noisy belt sanders(although they work quick) are dirty and I have no workbench to put it on, so I use it on the floor while sitting on a chair. @JamesTerrioDidn't know you sharpen for a living, thought you'd just put an edge on knives you make.
