got this ready for ht appears to have a what may be a crack or something. I am new and have no idea but I don't like it.

Looks like a "2-inch" mark. Not sure how this blade was formed, but a 2-inch mark is made usually when you are grinding with the edge of the belt all the way into the plunge, and the opposite edge of the blade digs a groove. It can be avoided with practice by either very slightly lifting the blade on the tip-side as you work into the plunge or by keeping the stock completely flat on the belt without pausing as you work in that area (tip: keep your sparks flying from the middle of the belt).

Iv didn't notice it until i git to 400 grit hand sanding . Yes its in the same place on both sides. I try not to use the edge of the belts, but it is possible.

Forgot also when i annealed it it came out with a .bow. i straightened it with a vice. This appears to be in about the same spot as the bow was. It was only a slight bow i wouldn't have thought it would be the result of that. ThiS is a file knife as well. Had to do something new belts came in and steel hasn't made it yet.

I try not to use the edge of the belts, but it is possible.

That's the problem. If you try to keep the blade centered on the belt you are more likely to create the 2" mark. Only use the side 1/3 of the belt as you grind. Do this by angling the blade handle away from you as you grind.

Thx for tip that's probably what im doing. I'm tying so hard to make sure im not using one edge that im using the other edge.

Im so thankful for everyone on this site. Without it i would have never made a knife .

that was it. heat treated it and then cleaned it up with 220 then hand sanded to 400. it gone. used the smith sharpening system on it. this is the sharpest knife I have ever had. it cuts paper straight without pulling just go straight down. also can cut it clean with just a swipe. now I know you pros are used to this but its the first one I have ever got this sharp I am quite proud lol.

was kinda dark in my shop I need better lighting. I screwed up the grind a little so I attempted to make both sides the same.
