I recently got my first ATS 34 from Admiral, and just got the knives back from Bos. I was finishing one out today and am starting to see a dendritic pattern like I am used to seeing in D2.

Is this normal? or did I get the wrong steel? I am going to be pissed if I have to send the knves back to get re-heat treated..

Thanks for anyone who knows!!

Yup, that happens sometimes with ATS34 as you work on the final finish. If it is really unacceptable you could do a hand sand finish and it would not be so obvious. I have not noticed it for a while but it must come out in different batches.

Ok thanks, it is not a huge deal as I am bead blasting for a finish, it was just weird because it showed up prominently at 200 grit on the grinder!

Good to know I don't have an issue with the wrong steel!

I've heard Admiral's ATS-34 can show tractor-tread patterns when finished up nicely, so I try to stay away from it if I can. CPM 154 is much better .... if you can find it!

ha, that is why I got the ATS 34, no CPM stuff that I can find for an affordable price.

Dan it looks like a bunch of little random shiny branches as you polish it out. D2 is famous for it. That is about as scientific as I can get!

what I was told is that dendrites are a sort of carbide-like structure that form in the steel, but what makes them unusual is that they form in branching patterns.

I think some destruction testing is in order for this batch of knives, I am not feeling good about the steel.
