I have a knife I'm going to be forging out and it needs to be 2.75" wide by 1/4" thick and made from L6. I am ordering some stock from crucible and I'm wondering what size round i would need for that. i want enough that I'm not cutting it close size wise. i was thinking 7/8" or 1" round would work but i thought i would ask before i ordered material. thanks everyone

ok the way I look at it area of the steel needed, so you need .6875 (2.75" x .25") you options are 1" (.5" x .5" x 3.14) = .785" so that give you .6010" for the 7/8"

I also always try to add a fuge factor, so I say go with 1"

That's just me
Chuck

edit for my " and ' marks

thats the same math i did. i will forge in the bevels as well. but i hate to hope that the bevels will widen it to the size i need

Thanks, that's what i thought as well. I just got off the phone with crucible and ordered the 1" and to my suprize I got 9 feet of the 1" for the same price as 9 feet of the 7/8". there is a price break at the one inch. so the minumim order is like 76 bucks which means that buys 20 pounds of 7/8" or 26 pounds of 1". o i lucked out.
