I have a Schrade Old Timer 1520T Sharpfinger.

Amazing knife, but the problem I have with it is the steel used. While the 7CR17 takes a great edge, it doesn't tend to hold one very well.

So is it even legal for me to begin looking to have a custom made out of a higher quality material but with the same overall design principles in tact?

excellent, thanks for the info, now I need to go about the process of finding somebody to build one :) Not exactly sure how that's done so I guess I'm welcome to suggestions.

You can post an ad in the exchange here on Bladeforums, there is even a Knifemaker Wanted section.

Well I don't see any current posts in the knifemaker wanted section, but I think I'll give that a shot and see what it gets me. Thanks for the advice.

You will only be able to see threads that you've started there. The service providers though can see them all.

You know, if I didn't know any better I would think somebody put some serious thought and time into this forum layout. Thinking maybe a membership is in order sooner then later.

You can even make a precise copy if you want. Just dont try to sell it using the Schrade or Sharpfinger name.

A year ago I made a sharpfinger inspired knife. I change the handle shape a bit and gave the blade more sweep for skinning:

Looks like you got some action the the Knifemakers Wanted board:thumbup: Please post up pics of what you end up with:)

It's only illegal to misrepresent a counterfeit and sell it as real or use trademarks on work being sold. But you can make an exact copy, marks and all if you want, as long as they're not sold.

Thanks for all the information guys, and yes I surprisingly got some very quick action. The maker and I are very much still in the planning stages, but I'm definitely liking some of the things he is throwing at me and I'm doing the same in throwing some back at him. Also Bruce, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has an appreciation for this particular knife design. I actually did a forum search for Sharpfinger I think and I saw that picture of your knife. I do like your thoughts on the increased tip length for skinning, but I actually skin with 2 different blades then de-bone with a third, the benefits to skinning in a shop on a hoist :P. I personally will be sticking with as close to original design as possible on the blade shape, but I can very much appreciate exactly what you did and exactly why you did it. Definitely tells me I'm not the only one who has skinned with this knife before. The sharpfinger itself has such a useful working shape I'm really really surprised we don't see more knives like it in today's fixed blade production market. Seems like everybody thinks bigger is better, where in many cases the smaller blade just offer better accuracy and easier handling. I've rambled enough, but I do want to thank you guys again for being so helpful in getting me this far, even if you're not the ones building my knife, I appreciate the time and effort taken out to help somebody who appears to be a client of somebody else. Very classy guys, very classy.

I have a Sharpfinger style knife finished and ready to go. The steel is AEB-L and the handle is Desert Ironwood. Send me an email at the address below if you're interested. I still need to make the sheath but the knife is ready to ship.

Darrin thank you for the offer, but AEB-L isn't the type of material I am looking for in this knife and I am also happy with the collaboration going on between myself and the maker who stepped up and offered his services. Thank you again though for the offer, if anything changes I will keep this in mind.

Lets keep buying/selling out of Shop talk please.

All such discussions need to be by email or PM.
