Is it just me, or Benchmade knives come from factory almost dull ?

My 520 came with a well ground edge, no flat spots or uneven grinds, but the angle was really obtuse and had a really coarse scratch pattern.

I own 2 Benchmades a D2 710 and a 154CM 556, both had the obtuse angle and coarse grinds, but despite looking dull they were relatively sharp. I like a fine polished edge and I don't think I will ever see that on a production knife so I live with the fact no production knife will meet my edge standards, besides I like sharpening, its a very zen like experience for me.

My 745 was the same, grinds look very coarse but it was still sharp enough to give me the only self inflicted cut I've had in nearly 20 years. :o Definitely rough though, after a few minutes sharpening it is a much smoother cutter.

I'm also comparing price point. For the same money in say ZT, you get a heck of a knife as opposed to most BM, but then they're different types of knives so I'm not sure this analogy is relevant.

For those who have ZT knives, how sharp do they come out of the box ?

Every ZT that I have owned/messed around with (over a few hundred total) come sheeeeeeeeeearrrppp!! :D:eek:

"Hey Cleetus, it's sharp, I got arterial spray !"
"Good job Jim-bob !"

hehe, good one!

I've bought 4 Benchmades over the last 18 months or so. All of them have been hair popping sharp, but not sharper than the $20 Kabar Dozier hunter I bought. That one was sharp enough that (foolishly) pressing the lock and letting the blade fall was enough to cut the finger I didn't get out of the way. Not badly, but it drew a fair amount of blood for just a falling blade.

I just got my BM 940, my first quality knife (recently became interested in knives through reading this forum!), in the mail today. After reading this thread I was curious to see how sharp it would be out of the box. Touching the edge it didn't seem super sharp, as if it would easily cut my skin. But when I tried shaving a little arm hair it shaved a patch of my arm baby-smooth! I'm a complete novice and can't even compare my new 940 to any other blades, but I was surprised it could shave like that without "seeming" razor-sharp. In any case, I'm lovin' my new BM! :D
