Is it just me or Cold Steel knives are general either low quality or overpriced ?

I have a recon 1 and it seems sturdy and the lockup is excellent but for aus-8 it was quite overpriced.

I personally own a lot of CS knives and have never found them to be either low quality nor overpriced. :D

I think the biggest problem with Cold Steel is their inconsistency. Depending on what

model and where it was made, you have to find out too much about a particular knife.

Some of their knives are great, others depend on many variables.

Chip,

Have you had a bad experience with CS? Perhaps you could share it with us, to help better understand what you ask. My first CS was great quality at an excellent price, on the forums just two weeks ago. :)

My Recon Scout is no Busse that's for sure and there's a reason for that - it doesn't cost $400-500!

In my limited number of outings so far the RS has proven to be very capable and excellent quality.

My spidie sence sences a shitstorm coming.

It's a fair question, just not worded diplomatically. :D
CS really isn't over priced, and AUS8 is far better than surgical stainless, 440A, and 420.
MSRP seems like a lot, but you can always find better deals.
Just keep your eyes open.

Nah, I was just asking that's all.

Guys, keep your knives folded :D I'm not looking for a fight here....seriously.

Actually, I've just bought a Ti-Lite last week, the 4'' one with aluminum handle. I really like it. It has a tiny bit of play up and down, but I guess it is normal. Overall I'm very fond of this knife.

So, being fond of this knife and it being my first CS ever, I started looking into other CS knives. Some seem to be awesome, while others not so nice or overpriced...

I wanted to get a Triple action but found out the handle feels cheap, at least that's what I heard on You Tube from guys making a review of it.

So I thought I'd ask the forum. Again, no need to feel threatened guys, I'm only being curious, no more no less.

I think the TiLite is the only liner lock they make. And the Triple action is perhaps the most gimmicky. The Triad lock is where its at in the CS folder line. American Lawman, Recon, AK-47......etc.

Hmmm. No mention of where you bought it, what you bought, if it was new, used, in between such as new old stock of a discontinued model nothing at all in the way of specifics just a generalized blanket statement!??? Me thinks someone is just trying to stir the pot!

Giving the benefit of the doubt but remaining watchful, my comments are regarding Cold Steel and quality: Granted there have been some of their knives over the years that were not up to the same level of quality or build as some of the others they offered in higher price points and that may well still be the case. I would imagine that with any company that offers as many models as Cold Steel that there are some of lesser build quality and value than the upper tier models but it really depends on what you expect to see and what is directly competing with them in the same price point. I do not see anything being offered now from Cold Steel's competitors in comparative price ranges that indicates that Cold Steel stands out as giving the customer less quality or bilk the customer unjustly for their hard earned money. What I do see right now at least as far as I can tell with what Cold Steel is offering since Andrew Demko came on board is that there is somewhat of an increase in interest for their products not only in myself but in members here and in private contacts from people asking me more about them than in times past.

For what its worth, I have several of their new knives using the Triad lock and must say that each one of them from the cheapest mini Lawman to the most expensive Rajah 1 are all flawless perfection in knife making. I might also add that for the money, they came with what I believe to be the strongest most reliable locking mechanism in all of the knife industry at this time.

The Tri-Ad lock has garnered a lot of praise. Personally I'm very fond of the American Lawman and also like the Spartan.
Their tomahawks are well regarded.
The Trail Master is a classic and has a lot of fans.
Their over-the-top marketing seems to bother some. If anything I find it amusing.

i got a small and large lawmen they came out sharp with zero blade play a real working mans knife,i got a ti lite it locks tight but it nevers gets packed..

I have not purchased any CS products lately, but I always thought they were of good quality for the price. I own some seconds and I own some tomahawks. I own some out of production twist locks. In my opinion, a better product than alot of other name manufacturers are producing. Yup, good enough for me.

You think I'm trying to stir the pot cause you don't know me. I'm just very curious about CS.

I bought my Ti Lite from Warriors and Wonders in Vancouver Canada brand new.

I may get the 6'' version of this as I kind of like it. You're right their Triad lock is top-notch. My query has more to do with steel quality, that is, edge retention.

I forgot to add I've also purchased a Paradox along with the Ti lIte. It is a nice knife, but I bought it more out of sheers curiosity more than anything. I like it, but it's slow opening, as I expected. I guess I'll resell it to a friend. I'd prefer a real balisong, but it's prohibitied in Canada, so I'll pass.

I have almost the entire Emerson knives collection, along with tons of Spyderco's and a few Benchmade knives. So that's I guess why I was asking about CS in order to see how they rank against the above mentioned brands.

No I question your motives more because of the way you made that first post in this new thread you started. Just being watchful for a troll. Your second post is much better and now that you have provided more I can see that you have serious questions and are not here just trying to get a rise out of people about a company known here for being a hot topic whenever their products or their owner comes up in a thread.

I have just as many of the same brands as you do. Personally I think AUS8 is under rated for what it offers because in my own uses it certainly stands right up well next to 154CM, 420HC, as well as many other current steel choices being offered by other companies competing with Cold Steel. Spyderco has always been the exception for blade steel choices and if the blade steel is more important to you than other things that maybe Cold Steel brings to the table that Spyderco, Benchmade or others don't offer. I think overall it balances out pretty well particularly now because none of the companies you mentioned or any of the competitor companies I own product from have any lock that can compete with Cold Steels Triad. I would love to see an Axis Lock compared in a video side by side personally but I have a hunch the Axis would lose.

I agree--their steel isn't probably the best one out there, at least so far as AUS8, but then they offer some serious locking power--their locking mechanism is top of the line for sure.

I'm glad you found out I'm not a troll LOL. I was being lazy in my first post in this thread. Had a tough day and feel brain dead.

On a sidenote, I also have two ZT knives--350 and 400. I really like ZT as well.
