... there something I've missed recently regarding Great Eastern Cutlery?

I don't keep my finger on the pulse of the cutlery industry regularly, but I have noticed something;

I do occasional scans of "that" auction website, mainly looking for 25's, and last night I noticed that the prices suddenly seemed to be a bit higher than I'm used to seeing. On everything GEC.

Granted, most of the time the pricing is a bit silly on some of the items on "that" auction site, but this seemed markedly different. Models that were going for, let's say, $80.00 are now at $125.00 or higher. And my last look wasn't too long ago.

Is there some gouge about GEC that I've missed, or is this merely a fluctuation?

I don't want to alarm anyone, I'm just curious...

As you know, I too scour the interweb for the more interesting 25s. I've noticed the same thing with them. GEC in general tends to get priced up as trends do. The 25s for instance recently bounced a little I think mostly due to the late 2015 run that was released. The same thing happened with 85s which were easy enough to find a year or so ago but have become flavour of the month and are often doubled or tripled.

GEC has definitely spread to a wider audience too. A number of very widely followed YouTube reviewers whom I check in on from time to time started reviewing slipjoints and in particular GEC over the last couple of years but its really taken off towards the later part of 2015.

Luckily for me, another of my fave patterns hasn't become uber popular yet.

What they ask for them and what they get are two different things. Check the sold listings to see what they really sell for. People are asking more for them than in the past but a lot go unsold only to be relisted. Limited runs and high demand lead to higher prices, especially in the after market.

Oh, I get that. It just seemed to me that there was a sudden spike and I wondered if there was a particular reason.

I mean, try looking at Canal Street Cutlery sometime...

Feedback is a better place for this discussion. Moving it there. Thanks.

Sorry. I wanted to keep this discourse limited to Traditionals. (GEC in particular) If it becomes a bitchfest about knife auction prices in general, I'll shut it down.

Noticed it as well. Think it is just the whole genre of traditional knives becoming popular. Once someone gets tired of Case and the usual suspects, GEC is the only real logical upgrade. :P

I have noticed the same thing. I have even seen folks asking 50% over retail for knives that are still in stock at dealers. There are a couple of GEC knives that I would like, but I can live without them if the prices get too high

Case in point - I just watched a Bulldog Brand Amber Bone Lima Bean (GEC 25) go for $132.50!

Incredible!

They're simply selling to less educated customers who're more about instant gratification than a lot of facts and details.

I have been a member for many years on another forum that specializes in vintage items but hats are the main stay. It seems I also missed the heydays when a beautiful vintage hat could be found on the "auction" site for a reasonable price. As interest rises in limited quantity products, prices move accordingly. Add to that those who want to take advantage of increased interest and will always look for an opportunity to inflate profits.

I have only started purchasing GECs in the last few months so I guess I am contributing to the problem. If GEC tripled production how would we feel? Easier to find a particular model and at a reduced cost might remove some of the mystique.

,,,Mike in Canada - pre coffee rambling.
