do the Kershaw knives seem a little dull new? I just bought my first kershaw, a ken onion blur combo and the edge doesn't seem to be as sharp as I thought it should be... well it's still sharp but it doesn't seem to compare to my spyderco delica combo edge. Do the kershaw's need sharpening out of the box or do the spyderco delica typically have a sharper edge?

My experience has been both Kershaw and Spyderco having consistently sharp edges, with Spydercos being sharper than the Kershaws. I haven't gotten a knife new from either company I'd consider dull.

My Kershaw zdp mini-cyclone was the sharpest knife I've had out of the box, with a couple of Spyderco not far behind.

If you don't mind shipping it to Kershaw they will sharpen it for you I believe as does Spyderco.

thanks for the info, my delica was stolen when my car got broken into. The serations on the delica knife were extremely sharp. I guess dull is not a good description, maybe just not as sharp as I would expect. I will give kershaw a call and maybe send it to them. Thanks again.

My Kershaw Junkyard Dog II was sharp out of the box. Not razor sharp, but sharp enough.

Now my Lahar on the other hand was absolutely razor sharp out of the box.

My first and only Kershaw was a Junkyard Dog partial serrated. It may be that the partial serrated is hand sharpened by Kershaw and they didn't do a good job. Mine wasn't very well sharpened. I have a plain edge on order so I'll be able to tell then.

Send the knife to Kershaw for sharpening or go to Bass Pro Shop for sharpening.

Kershaw does a fanatastic job of testing before each knife goes out.... there are degrees of sharp. If you can't fine tune it yourself, send it to Kershaw. Remember, human beings do this work and there will be some slight variances.

My Damascus Leek was the sharpest knife I have ever owned. Absolutely RAZOR sharp. I have owned a few Spyderco knives, but none of them were as sharp as my Kershaws.

ALL of my Kershaw knives are razor-sharp. In-fact, my JYD II is even beyond razor-sharp!.:).

I should have mentioned that I asked Kershaw warranty about my JY partial serrated not being sharp - Specifically,
1. Side had a bevel (?) behind the edge the other did not
2. The closer you got to the serrations the thicker the edge became and the wider the angle became.
3. The serrations were not well defined - looked like they were cut but not sharpened
4. I couldn't get at the edge with my Sharpemaker.
The Warranty dept. said it might not have been sharpened properly and to send it in.

I decided to play with the knife trying to sharpen it. I think I will need to bring it to Bass Pro Shop to fix it up.

I'm getting a new JY with Micro Tek serrations from 888.knivesrus.com soon.
I'll post a review of it later.

Kershaw must have seriously improved in the last few years since. A few years ago I bought a few of them and they were in no way close to sharp.

Every Kershaw I have bought new has come out of the box sharp enough to shave the hairs off a gnat's posterior. Are they as sharp as some of the fanatics among us like? Probably not. But they have all been very sharp.

I have an example of almost all of the current line up of knives and I can truly say the sharpest Kershaw I have encountered out of the box is a Lahar. I always give new knives the old shave the arm test (I have many bald spots on my arms and my wife calls it knife nut mange), and I didn't feel any pull what so ever with the Lahar. I thought it was dull and wasn't popping any hairs so I pulled a little further then realized that a good portion of my forearm was shaved absolutely smooth. This knife put my Mach 3 to shame.

i have a needs work and it came shaving sharp out of the box. (i did however have to make it scarry sharp by putting it on my cardboard buffing wheel) did you get your kershaw knives from the factory or from another dealer?

there's sharp, scary sharp, shaving sharp, pretty sharp.... but there's really only one "dull". I really can't fathom a dull knife coming directly out of Kershaw.
