Is it just me?

I like super steels for the novelty, but prefer steels that are easy to sharpen. I also like high carbon over stainless if given a choice. For stainless, I am really liking Carpenters BD1, and as I do not cut cardboard boxes and rope for a living, or even a hobby, BD1 works really well.

There is no doubt...I'm a steel snob. I love the super-steels. If the steel isn't "way up there" in Jim Ankerson's chart, then I don't want it. Even in Spyderco mules, I bought my first two of the latest model, the Mule Team 18. Along with Halpern scales, they are going to be great gifts for my two sons.
Okay, let's get practical. What do I carry? CRK Zaan or lge Sebbie... S30V and S35VN..Some things are MORE important than the steel.

I've been trying to sell myself on a CRK because I've been against the popular vote for a long time, but honestly I need the ability to snap my knife open quickly and close it quickly as well, for work purposes. From what I've seen, felt, and heard, the CRKs aren't meant as "quick and dirty" cutters.

I'm glad to see that while everyone buys some of the more modern steels(like myself), no one seems to be forcing themselves into the mindset of using their newest steels for EDC. Although it can be fun. :)

One of the reasons I don't believe in 'super steels'. They are steels just like any other. They have their advantages. They also have their disadvantages. If they was better in every way, older steels would be obsolete and would probably be becoming phased out of production by now.

After a few years and a few dollars, I have determined that I don't care one bit for "super steels" or anything over 59 rockwell.

It is fun to debate the strengths and weaknesses of various steel types but for my uses, aus8 or 8cr is just fine and 154cm or vg10 is outstanding.

I find that steels with tremendous wear resistance only truly shine when doing extended cutting through somewhat abrasive media. I appreciate not having to sharpen a knife partway through a job and steels like M390 are great for that. However, thats not the type of cutting I do in my day-to-day life, so many of my knives are in AUS8, VG-10, 440C, 1095 or similar steels. Now if I was in a position where I was cutting rope or carpet, skinning large game animals or other, similar tasks all day long I'd want a whole lot more edge retention than my current rotation offers.

I never thought about myself as steelnut. I buy knives based on overall design. Should be descent steel, but S30V, S35Vn and vg10 are perfectly fine for me. I was using sharpmaker for my sharpening needs along with Congress stones. Touching-up is fast, but reprofiling was still major pain in the neck. even my moldmasters starts with 120 grit. So last summer I bit a bullet and got WE Fields & sport. Reprofiled all my VG10 and S35VN knives and feel good about it. Later I got Spyderco 2013 Forum S110V Native. I love design and dark green is my favorite color. With adding S110V to my EDC changed only frequency of sharpening. Reprofiling still a breeze, touch-ups on Sharpmaker still the same couple minutes or less. I use only flats of medium rods. Now I love S110V. And still buying knives, when I love overall design. I love VG10 on my Caly3.5 and Persian.
