Everytime I get my BM out to use,or just to admire or play with,my heartbeat goes up,my hands get sweaty(thanks for the micarta Jerry)and I can't help but get this crazy kind of a mad man grin on my face.Is it some chemical in the INFI or what?

I think one of my friends has an allergic reaction to the canvas micarta. No joke. when i hold the knife for 15 to 20 minutes there will be a little discoloration from palm sweat but it soon evaps out. My buddy can hold one for 1 minute and by the time he gets done the handle is soaked with sweat. Can canvas micarta iritate the skin? Not that it matters jus wondering.

All the more reason for him to get his own.....

Here is a tip for you owners of the canvas micarta handled Busse's.If you like the lighter color of the micarta, take a rag with some acetone and rub it in the micarta. But, after you handle the knife and your sweat and skin oils soak back into the handle,it will turn dark again.Jerry, would you comment and this?

The BM-E is a great knife, but the handles are too small for me. How difficult would it be to replace them with some G-10 or other grind in Micarta? Does anyone do this? thanks
Jason

I also find the handles significantly too slim. Because of this, I find my hand glancing off the pommel a lot (because of the looser grip), and chopping is less safe and less comfortable. I think that doubling the scale thickness and rounding them more would significantly improve ergonomics and safety, especially during heavy chopping. I guess there will always be an improvement that can be made; to any design. In one way that ensures my continued interest in Busse knives; the evolution and improvement of Busse, as well as other makers', blades. If the handles were thickened and rounded, it would be a huge improvement in my mind.

Some of you may scream blasphemy, but I'll have to admit to something...

I too found the handles a little lacking in comfort when I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I did the same thing with my BM that I did with a custom table tennis paddle a few years ago. I wrapped the handle with (egads!!) a fabric tape that you can get at sporting goods stores, used for raquets, etc..

Though it doesn't look as good as the canvas micarta, it helps fill the hand a little more and gives a better purchase on the knife for those chopping chores (hmm...alliteration).

While I'm all about aesthetics of bladeware, I've got plenty of showpieces. I got the Busse BM for pure function.

I use to just hit the canvas Micarta with a little soapy water and a scotch brite pad.
Seems to work great to get the canvas grippy again and bring out the greyish color.
Lately, I've just been leaving it alone and don't notice any big increase in slipperiness. I personally find the handle very comfortable in every way. It took a little getting accustomed to but I would not change a thing. (other than milling the edges of the slabs to a rounder profile...which I think Busse is now doing anyway)

if the handle isn't big or thick enough for you, and it is a newer E model...
wrap the handle in 550 cord via the Strider style (samurai style wrapping) and it fits perfect...use the same instructions that Strider supplies you with on their web page or the forums here at bf.com.
it works great and looks cool too...
now if they would let me play with mine...

Crowinghorse: that's a great idea that would serve many masters, but I was really hoping to find some info replacing the slabs. Once again, the knife performs beyond my expectations; but the handle MUST go. Any info or ideas on this problem are welcomed.
TIA,Jason

Is the handle actually too slim for you to grip tightly or is a tight grip too uncomfortable during impacts?

Cliff,

I started off using a strong grip on the SH, but found it not to be the grip for me. I just wasn't getting the best performance. I therefore held it more loosely, and found that, due to the slim grip, that my hand moved around quite a lot during heavy (and I mean HEAVY) chopping. Full power swings. During this movement (and while this movement was a little unsafe, my hand never came close to coming off the handle due to the back and front guards. Very good design.), my pinky finger glanced quite a lot off the pommel. I found it a little uncomfortable, and I expect extended periods of heavy chopping with the SH could cause some rubbing/chaffing on my hand, especially the pinky. But, this is ONLY during heavy chopping, which in my opinion, is not the SH's true niche (atleast not its main niche). I find the thinner handle slabs uncomfortable to use during utility cutting, but that "uncomfortableness" is only because I dislike slim handles, and doesn't every come close to hurting or rubbing my hand.
