Ok So I Own A Ozark Trail hatchet and its very small and the edged portions less then 4 inches and i reside in the state of Connecticut and i was wondering if its legal to carry it around openly while its in its sheath ive contacted the local PD but they say that theres not enough information to give me an exact answer i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with carrying a hatchet in ct.

thx~~~

Try contacting the State Police Barrocks closest to you.
Do you mean carry in the woods hiking or down to the market grabbing milk?

After thought...you cant conceal it while carrying, you probably wont be allowed.

Why would you need to carry it around? Zombie infestation at the mall? Carrying that around is just asking for trouble no matter what.
Its not even a real good axe anyhow..........

I understand the need for your inner Rick Grimes to come out sometimes, buy I would leave the that part of your personality where it belongs: in the woods. I am not sure what is the point to open carry a hatchet. I can easier accept some fancy customized tomahawk with amazing leather sheath, than a guy with easily available W-mart hatchet. My first thought would be: this guy have just run out of medication and went for a shopping spree in camping department. You would be dealing with cops on daily basis, doesn't matter if it is legal or not.

What other tools do you carry on your persons openly?

A tape measure, hammer, pliers, hand saw, screw driver, wrench, carpenters pencil, spirit level, chisel, moisture meter, layout square?

If you don't carry all that stuff plus more then you are not aloud to walk around with a 4 inch blade pal!

I believe there must be some mythical axe archetype buried deeply inside our heads; People are genuinely concerned when they see somebody holding an axe. Usually, whenever I find an axe in thrift store I pay right away and put it in the trunk of my car, so I can come back an continue shopping. Last year I was at estate sale and the place was packed with people. Because of a long line to the register, I just kept walking around with double bit axe in my hand searching for some other rusty treasuries. It was weird experience: wherever I turned people were starting "friendly" conversations trying to gauge if new axe owner isn't some kind of psycho. :)

lol thanks for the feedback love the reply's im not going to be carrying it around in a mall or anything like that just to and from hiking trips i dont have a car so i need to walk about 1 mile with my gear to get the the trails i cant fit it into my pack so i have to strap it on the outside i just dont want to be arrested walking that 1 mile.

Ps. Rick Grimes Rules

I have nothing against you guys, but I wouldn't ask you for legal advise. ;)
If I needed legal advise, I wouldn't ask myself either. This thread is turning out to be real fun! Back on topic, I wouldn't worry about walking to the trails with an axe. Unless you're in the city in which case all bets are off, no one gives a hoot when they see me wandering around with an axe and I imagine the same would happen to you. Then again, I generally am cutting something down or at least amongst timber. People will probably ask you questions the first few times they see you, then they'll just forget or ignore "that backpacker guy" Try it, and if you get stopped by an officer, explain what you are doing and tell him that his office couldn't tell you if it was illegal to carry the hatchet or not. If he only sees you with it once, you'd probably just get told either,"Have a good day" or "You can't carry one of those but I'll give you a warning this time as you didn't know better"

Just out of curiosity. What part of the country do you live in ?
City, State ?

Edit : never mind I re read the original post .

I think you'll find that the answer really depends on which part of the state you are in. If you're in the NW corner (Litchfield, Torrington, Goshen, Cornwall etc) or in the NE corner east of the river, most likely nobody will look twice. However, if you are on the Gold Coast (Fairfield County), or near someplace like Bridgeport or New London, you may be stopped if a cop sees you.
One other thing, you might want to check the rules on what you can carry in the places you are hiking. If its State Forest, some DEP officers might have different ideas than the regular cops, and some of those places don't allow "weapons" on the trails.
