Is it me, the blade metal, or god forbid the sharpmaker

I have been using a sharpmaker for a little while now and have gotten fantastic results on my Spyderco blade and Leatherman multi tools.

A friend asked me to sharpen a little pruning knife for him. Try and try again, I couldn't get an edge on it. I have no idea what the blade is made from, only has made in China on it. However, the knife has sentimental value to my friend.

Is it me, the knife or the sharpmaker?

It could be that the edge is too obtuse for the Sharpmaker, and you aren't hitting the edge. If that is the case then the knife will have to be reprofiled to match the angles on the Sharpmaker before you will be sharpening the edge.

Try drawing on the edge with a black magic marker. Swipe the edge a few times on the Sharpmaker and if the marker is still on the edge, the edge is too obtuse. You might have to do it freehand. Also make sure that you're doing it on the 40 degree settings first.
