I agree. Does look like mesquite, but fuzzy pictures and fuzzy wood make it a bit harder to ID. First and second pic look like mesquiteMesquite has quite the range of colors. Yes, that looks like mesqute to me, as a south Texas guy. But honestly, the photos don't really help much in the ID process. At first glance, yes, mesquite, but I can't be certain.

Nice jobThanks for all the replies. I did sand it, I did get a some mesquite smell from it. Here are a couple of better pics of the work in progress. I still need to finish the bolster and butt cap, shorten the handle, make some spacers, finish shaping the handle and the sharpening.
