This wood was part of a bundle I purchased. I was told it was mesquite but I am not sure. Anyone have opinions? It saws pretty easily but feels hard when I push a knife blade into it. Does not have much of a smell.

Mesquite has quite the range of colors. Yes, that looks like mesqute to me, as a south Texas guy. But honestly, the photos don't really help much in the ID process. At first glance, yes, mesquite, but I can't be certain.
I agree. Does look like mesquite, but fuzzy pictures and fuzzy wood make it a bit harder to ID. First and second pic look like mesquite

Agree, looks like mesquite to me. There are a bunch of different varieties, but that looks like one.

Looks just like the mesquite pieces you can buy at rural king for smoking. I’ve not seen a lot of mesquite. I have one knife handled in it and it certainly looks the part.

Thanks for all the replies. I did sand it, I did get a some mesquite smell from it. Here are a couple of better pics of the work in progress. I still need to finish the bolster and butt cap, shorten the handle, make some spacers, finish shaping the handle and the sharpening.

What finish did you apply to this handle? It looks great.

Thank you!
I rub a couple bouts of Watco Danish Oil on almost all my handles. (Micarta, too)

I wipe on a coat with a rag, let it dry overnight or so...then rub it on my hands it kinda buffs it.. Sometimes on my jeans. I do this a few times.
Maybe rub a coat on once a year.
I started using it for making furniture, but then used it on guns and now knives..... My dad showed me it when I was a kid. Been using it for around 40 years. It's super simple.
