What's your definition of "good functional hard use knife blade"? A friend of mine just made a railroad spike knife that he said tested HRc 56 hardness. So probably similar if not better than many factory knives priced $50 or less I bet. Being low alloyed steel, it may also be easier to sharpen quickly in the field.
