Is it really the steel it's claimed to be?

The "superest" steel I have a knife in is VG-10 in a Delica that I was given. I like it and carry it daily.
For 65+ years almost all my knives have been carbon steel with an occasional 440-C thrown in.
I can pretty much tell from the way a steel feels while sharpening whether I want to keep it.
I've always considered the grind,heat treat and steel. In that order.
