Is it really worth it?

I'm very close to going ahead and buying my first Busse, a Battle Mistress. Everything I've read says it's an outstanding knife, but this will be the first one I'll ever buy that costs more than $100. So my question is, is it really worth it?

I've been thinking about buying the LE FBM, to accompany the Busse AK-47 I ordered last week (which will be my first Busse btw.).

A good thing about Busse knives (and swords ;) ) is that they all seem to keep their value really well, and most of them appreciate significantly after they are discontinued. I'd say you can't really lose; if you don't like it you'll probably get most of your money back by selling it, and you might even end up profiting from the deal :)

Busse knives are fine examples of their type.

If you have the funds and desire to own what is arguably the best of its type, go for it.

But beware, I've heard ownership can make one a werehog.

I think I'm gonna take the plunge, probably tonight, after a few beers. It will be my first Busse. Yeah, I think they are priced right, I mean take a look at Randall knives on Fee-Bay.

Gonna give my Swamp Rat M6 a little company!

Folks,
I have several Busses and while you might take that as grounds for a prejudicial opinion, don't. The fact of the matter is that I have more of these than all other brands combined. I only tell you this because I think like so many others, I think you will find they are simply outstanding in every way. I will further say that I personally only know of one person who got a number of Busses, and then voluntarily got out of owning them. When I say voluntarily, I mean that there was literally nothing there that would have prevented him from keeping his Busses. His reason for getting out--he said that he just could not use a Busse to its full potential, so why not have something else that is just as adequate for his needs and less expensive?

I have an AK and I LOVE it. War Boar, Game Warden, Natural Outlaw, etc., I haven't had one I don't like yet. BTW, I also have more than one Battle Mistress on order. Ahh, Busse...it is an addiction. Welcome to it if you take the plunge!!!

I don't personally have any Busse knives, but I am big knife collector and fan and I must say that you truly get what you pay for. A $20-50 knife will work decent enough, but the moment you drop a $300 knife into your hand I guarantee you that you'll see a HUGE difference in quality, weight and feel just picking it up. I have tried knives of even the same product line, but lower to higher end versions and I see, not only a huge difference in performance and wearability, but a huge difference in feel and comfort of a higher end, well made knife.

If you enjoy buying and owning knives, you will not be dissapointed buying an expensive knife. Conversely, if you rarely use a knife and are put-off by spending more than $50 on something like that, you might not see a whole lot of value in the higher end ones.

Good luck!

I almost hate to do this to you, but you asked....

Until about a year ago I also had never paid more than $100 for a knife- and really thought that was going it a bit! Then after much of the same kind of soul searching and research that you are doing, I ordered my Fusion Steel Heart (very close to the BM). I immediately went into shock- "what have I done? Almost $400 for a knife!" I was freaking out.

Then it arrived. I won't go into all the gruesome, intimate details, I'll just tell you that in the last year I have bought 4 more Busses- you have been warned! They really are addicting!

Seriously, get it- as has been mentioned (and you can see for yourself on the exchange) if you're not happy with it, you won't have any trouble getting your money back out of it.

Keeping their value and INFI are the only significant advantages of Busses IMHO.

If you just want knife that will do whatever you want to do (and if it fails, it has no question asked guarantee) then go for Ranger knives RD series. They are about $100. Although you probably won't make money on resale (as Justin doesn't discontinue each model) you can get one much easier (no 6 months wait as with Busses). And Justin has awesome customer service

(I personally can't see much in safe queen Busses. They can make some money, but is it the purpose of knife hobby?)

In other words: if you want user, why not get a Ranger and then see if there is something it can't do well enough for you?

Busses are worth it for the great steel and no nonsense performance. But the BM is way too big for anything I use a knife for. So for me, a BM is totally not worth it. But I really liked the Meaner Street I had.

You have to ask yourself WHY you want to buy one.

If you're in it to make money -- there are better ways to get a solid return on your cash.

If you want to collect some of the finest examples of an item (in this case, a combat knife), for personal or esthetic reasons, go right ahead.

Just picked up my first Busse the safe and easy way, from a well-known and reliable collector. It's a fairly large one (Desert Mr. Mofo) and I couldn't be happier. After owning it for several days, I'm already planning future purchases, including a brand new Fusion Battle Mistress. And yes, I realize that if my tastes ever change I will be able to trade or sell the knife (not a bad thing).

Thanks for the comments, everyone!
I don't want another "safe queen," I already have a few of those that were gifts from folks who thought that Frost was a good brand name, lol. What caught my attention was rumblings I've heard online that Busse is what Cold Steel claims to be. Supposedly, there's a video out there where somebody evaluates the BM vs. the Trailmaster. Anybody know about this?

Not a movie, but a review thread with pictures. URL is here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=398000

In case you didn't know, Mike Turber was the original owner and founder of Bladeforums.com. He still sometimes posts here.

As far as getting a Battle Mistress...the Hogs have a saying: "NO REGRETS". You wouldn't want to NOT get one and regret it later, would you? ;) Buying a Busse directly from the company is usually the cheapest way to purchase them...as there is usually some degree of markup on the secondary market.

I bought my first Swamp Rat earlier this year, and now own 4 Swamp Rats and 2 Busses...not counting my CGFBM on order. They are addicting!

I started collecting knives about 4 years ago and also had a difficult time going over the $100 barrier. Many people who are not enthusiasts don't understand. If you become an enthusiast, then you will understand. I am a certified Hog, not an mega uber Hog as some you will see post constantly on the Busse forum. I own a lot of other high end production knives, but overall Busse is my favorite high end production knife brand because Jerry comes up with new designs all the time and pays attention to ergonomics and customer wants like no other company IMHO. You will find the Busse crowd is one of the most brand loyal groups around.

I am now at the $1000 knife barrier. I crossed that a little over a year ago when I bought my first Mastersmith forged blade at the Blade Show in Atlanta.

Oh, by the way I have three FBMs on order. :D :)
