Is it time for Chinook IV? Any suggestions?

I think they should take a long hard look at the Emerson CQC-13. IMO the 13 took the Chinook concept of a folder bowie and really nailed it. Ernie is one talented designer!

But I lurrrve Spyderco's S30V so I would be very happy to get another one if they made it a bit more utilitarian in the vein of the CQC-13.

Hey, a little competition can be very healthy..... for us. :p

The "mid lock" is just about as convenient and ambidexrous a lock as you can get

What lock would you like to see replace the one in use now ?

Lockbacks are convenient if you like to use two hands, change your grip, etc. As to ambidextrous, I suppose the requirement of using two hands qualifies.

I'd give the CBL a try in this knife. The lock appears to be strong enough and so far the lock has proven reliable in my experience (with one annoying exception, anyway).

Don't change a thing. It wouldn't be a Chinook if changed. Just like the Manix, not the same. The mid lock on the Chinook/Manix series of knives is still IMO the strongest most RELIABLE lock made by Spyderco or any other manufacturer for that matter. A LOT of engineering went into the design of that overbuilt mid lock. It shouldn't be touched just to add a new flavor.

Is it possible to use 52100 steel w/ a protective coating?

I read such good things about the Mule 52100 that it has me wondering about how it'd work on a Chinook. Corrosion seems to be the biggest drawback. Which is why I mention coating the blade. Leaving only the edge exposed.
I don't think this would happen. Sal mentioned it was pretty involved getting the heat treat right on the 52100 mule. This may have also contributed to the switch from 52100 to O1 on the bushcraft. Add in the corrosion possibility with a folder, and I don't see it being as viable. Would be great for a sprint, but I dunno if the Chinook is a good candidate for that.

Bigger, please. And include a DVD of Mr. Keating demonstrating its proper use.

I also like the idea of going back towards the Chinook 1 blade with a higher grind. Saw one a forum member had Tom Krein regrind & it looks ideal to me.

-Add a wave
-Go back to the old blade style
-Thin the hollow grind
-Textured G10
-Thinner blade
-Ti liners
