...let someone who is looking for a certain knife know that another member is selling that particular knife, or trading it?

for ex.

JOESCHMOE: "for sale plain edge civilian blablablablabla"

JOHNDOE: "JOESCHMOE, drop a line to BOBSMITH, I know he was looking for that particular knife"

Or how about, if a knife was up for trade, and you knew another member was looking for it, but did not have what the trader wanted and you did. What is your opinion on trading for the civilian (example) with your military (example), then selling or trading it to the third party who wanted the particular knife, in this case, the civilian.

just a scenario or two I'd like to get opinions on.

thanks
Peter

First of all, its a good thought to think about how to help someone out.
A few positive rep points headed your way. ;)

Personally, I would like to know if someone sees something I'm looking for.

Its all a matter of how well you know someone, how certain you are that they are (or are still) looking for it, and how involved you want to get.

You can get too involved. A year ago I bought something because I knew someone was looking for it, figuring I'd just pass it through for them at that cost. They, however had just bought one too, so I had a $120 knife I did not want...

Just keep in-mind that links to eBay auctions/sales is not allowed here at BladeForums.

Don't think I knew that. Thanks Dann

My thought was within the BF community, member to member. I've had the opportunity to do such multiple times, and have refrained as I didn't know whether it was proper protocol.

now I know, and if I see something I know someone wants, I will give the heads up.

I doubt I would purchase it FOR them, but I never saw the harm in pointing someone in the right direction.

Here is another example-
If I have something up for trade, and I get an offer, something I am not interested in, would it be wrong to tell the person offering that I know someone who IS looking for the particular item they offer?

The reason I am asking these questions, is that it's happened time and time again since I've gotten my gold membership, and if one person wants something, and another wants to sell or trade that same something, I can't see the harm in passing the information on between parties.

again, thanks for the responses
Pete

sounds like American Capitalism at its finest, with you as a middleman (paid or not paid). Personally, I think it is a wonderful thing!
By the way, I am looking for a Spyder Anniversary delica, so let me know when you can point the way. :D

I have had somebody see me looking for something here and suggested an online dealer because I couldn't find it here. That seemed reasonable to me.

I think the main thing is that everyone involved in the transaction is happy about it. If that's the case I don't see why there would be a problem.

I already do when I can.
I haven't been able to very often, but sometimes when I'm window shopping here, I'll match a couple people togethere, especially newbies.

I don't see it as a problem, as long as everything is above board.

I agree! It's an honest attempt to help out a forum member(s). Nothing underhanded or dishonest.

Just remember that when you are doing a three way trade to get what you want there is even more chance of someone being disatisfied.

I see no problem with your other scenarios. Just make sure that all communications are clear and to the point.

I do it all the time. It is a great feeling when you can hook someone up with a knife you know they have been looking for for a long time.

I have done 3-way trades too. Fred wants to trade his Carson for a Mayo. I want a Carson but I don't have a Mayo. Joe has a Mayo and wants a Bogi. Takes some work to get it all right, but I get my Carson, Fred gets his Mayo, and Joe gets his Bogi.

It's all about community.

I dont see a problem with it at all. I was in a scenerio where a very good friend was going to trade one of his blades for a particular one he knew I wanted, I would have then purchased that blade from him, so he could buy what he wanted  ( Did you follow that?) The point is , in the end everyone gets what they want and we all go home happy. :)

I've done it a few times. I prefer to email them with the information, because if you post it online, you may be helping someone else beat them to it.

If you take it to email, you can even point them to an ebay auction :D
