@mods - not sure if this is a spyderco discussion or general knife discussion topic, as its about knife pivots, but about a spyderco knife pivot? If I'm wrong please move to right thread thanks

Ok, so I got a new spyderco Dragonfly G10 yesterday as well as some other stuff. However I didn't get to actually have a close look at my stuff until today. So I was looking at my G10 Dragonfly, and its awesome.

However I was looking at the pivot screw and it looks like its a bit weird. here are some massive pics to get an idea of what I'm talking about. I posted the links also, just so you can view them in a seperate window/tab.

Like should there be this big gap around the pivot screw that you can see above?

Is this normal? I'm not one to worry about cosmetic imperfections, and I intend to use this knife, but I'm not sure whether this is a problem, and its gonna fall apart or soemthing (an extreme situation), and if so can it be fixed (if it even needs to be) or whether its just me worrying about nothing?

It looks fine to me. I was expecting to see a stripped torx head or something. No worries as far as i can tell.

hahaha thanks guys, I just was not sure, my first spyderco and all. Some time I'll get a photo review up

I was the biggest benchmade fan for years, then when i got my spyderco's, there was no turning back. Their prices are amazing, you get good steel for low costs and they're indestructable. I love the spyder hole and it's the only knife i'll carry tip up. I've had the Delica 4 and the Caly3 in carbon fiber. I want more!

The D'fly is not what I would consider to be an "extreme use" knife to begin with. It's a smaller EDC that can handle lots of various tasks from food prep to cardboard shredding to most other things.
That pivot screw looks to me as if it was adjusted using 1 torx size too small. I do not have the G-10 version only the white FRN and Tattoo, but I would think there looks to be a washer missing, or I would say someone used the incorrect screw int aht knife all together. I'm sure if you called Spyderco they would mail you out a screw for a minimal price if anything at all. Give it a shot.

I'll try emailing them, also how would adjusting it with 1 torx bit too small affect it? I'm not sure what you mean

The screw is the correct size. I have the exact same knife and it looks the exact same.

cool, I wouldn't think spyderco would make a mistake like this, not that they never make mistakes, just this is pretty simple I would think.

hmm, just noticed that when I open it everynow and then it will make a scrapping noise, and on a one times a bit of green dust, probably g10 has come out- is this bad

Nothing to worry about. Some new knives initially have a gritty opening as you wear in the knife and close the tolerances.

It would strip the points of the star inside possibly. Or just rock around and cause bite marks inside the head.

It's fine. If you're going to adjust the pivot (do you have prior experience?) I suggest you remove the blade and if there are washers or anything else those too. Clean them with a rag and brake cleaner, clean the pivot too. Then put it all back together and lossely tighten the pivot. Put a few drops of oil in there and tighten it down a little bit more. You want to check to see that the oil hit the blade and washers. The trick i use is looking at the lockback and if theres oil on that, the oil could definately get into the blade area. So now you're done. Unless you want to use blue loctite to make the pivot stay where you want it as far as tightness so there's no bladeplay.

I would blow out any grit and dust with compressed air and give it a good wash under hot water. Maybe work the pivot under water. Blow out the water and re-oil.

Good to know, thanks for the verification.

That is what I meant, sorry. Sometimes a Torx bit may feel like it is grabbing nicely, but as soon as some torque is applied it eats up the corners of the screw or rounds the bit itself.

thanks for the explanation. I don't have any experience adjusting pivots adn such, and don't want to take it apart incase I screw something up or make it worse

EDIT - it is brand new also

Well, to adjust it. You look for bladeplay. I'm not advising you take it apart, but theres nothing you can really mess up. Just make sure the blade is in the open position if you take it apart. To adjust the pivot, grab the handle tightly, grab the blade between your pointer and index finger above the spine and wiggle while keeping the handle stationary. if you feel the blade wiggle, tighten the screw up a bit. When theres no play it's good. if its still, loosen the screw up a hair(literally).

there was no bladeplay to star with, so I'm hapy with that aspect

But the reason i was saying you would have to adjust it is because i had mentioned before about taking it apart to clean it and get rid of the grittiness... So you would have to adjust it if you did that.
