Is my Endura broken ?

I'm 99% sure that I already know the answer to this , but thought I might as well run the question and accompanying pic's by the Spyderco experts .

1. The back / spine (?) of the Endura protrudes whether the knife is open or closed , does that mean that it's definitely broken ?

2. Since this is an older Endura , and I don't have a receipt or box , does that make any sort warranty null and void ?

Please have a look at the pic's .

Thanks guys

P.S. I have contacted Spyderco about this and are waiting for a response.

It looks like the lockbar pivot pin may be sheared, or the pivot hole in the lockbar may be the culprit. Either way, it doesn't look safe to use.

As far as I know, it should still be under warranty, unless the problem was a result of abuse. Have you been chopping cars in half with it? ;)

I would agree with the above statement. I'll just add that yesterday I disassembled my Endura 4 for a thorough cleaning, and it was more of a PITA than I ever would have imagined trying to get the spring and lock bar in place. The spring is very strong, but you may be able to rig something in the pivot if for some reason the knife isn't covered under warranty. Maybe a small male/female Chicago screw from Knifekits, a rivet, etc...

I have a slightly older Endura than yours, same problem developed after years of solid use. I was told by Spyderco that they would look at it but sounded like retirement was the answer. I never bothered to get it fixed and it was a good reason to get the new E4

Send it back to the factory and see if they'll fix it. But it sounds to me like maybe it's had a lot of use with no lubrication. I kind of like to clean a folder with a soapy brush and hot running water once in awhile (once a year?), then dry and lubricate all the pivots and friction points LIGHTLY using some good weapons grade synthetic lubricant like Militec-1. Google them up. They will send you free samples of their oil and their grease if you ask them nicely. Try it, you'll like it. CorrosionX (spelled just like that) is excellent, too. Google it while you're at it. They may have samples, as well.

There are a couple of threads around here with The EASY way of going Lego on your D4's and E4's.

Edited to add: I just realized you have almost a thousand posts. Are you saying the EASY way is still a PITA.

If you send it in they may be able to fix it, or they may replace it with an new Endura. I'm not sure if they could put new pins in it or not.

How long have you had it? Has it given you good use for many years? If it has, I would just buy a new one and retire the old one. Thank it and put it up on a shelf. :)

The easy way is a PITA for me. I put it completely togather minus the lock bar. Then I slide it in the back, hold it in with my thumb while i slide the pin in with my other hand. SOOOO much easier than the sandwitch stack lego method.

As far as the lock. Id send it in. That doesn't look safe at all.
