Is neck knife a passing fad?

I'll second what a lot of people have said. I rarely wear a knife around my neck, but I often wear a "neck knife" on my belt or in my pocket on a static cord. The size class is a very useful one for almost any task aside from chopping.

Only time will tell. I hope not though. I seldom wear one, but have several. I Like the flexibility they offer. I just dont dress in a manner that really makes a neck knife the best option most days. Other days its great.

I carry a Camillus Arclite with a cord wrap handle. I'd say I wear it 2 days out of the week. I have experimented with a static setup IWB or pocket, but it feels most comfortable around the neck. Wearing the knife over an undershirt (AKA wifebeater) dramaticaly reduces any chafing. If it's a formal occasion, I just leave one of the buttons undone on my dress shirt and it is easily accesible. I've also noticed that it throws nicely at the 15' range.

I READ SOMEWHERE THAT DOC HOLIDAY WORE ONE AT THE GAMBLING TABLE AND WAS VERY INCLINED TO USE IT ON OCCASION.

Welcome to the forums, Banger. I should tell you that many of the forumites don't care for all caps, better me telling you than... oh.. say Don Rearic. Hope you enjoy this place and learn from all of us.

Now, I have also heard that the Doc wore one. Neck knives were very common among the American Indians.

i like SDouglas and Burke's comments, 'neck knife" is simply term for versatile, small fix bladed knife, usually drop or clip pt. I blieve they will stay around because they are practical and USER friendly .
actually I prefer belt carry but often wear on neck for work, maintenance underneath pipes, etc it is easy to reach on my back.

I have several neck knives, none of which are comfortable or particularly useful in my daily life.

On the other hand, while camping, nothing beats my BG-42 Carson F4 for easy access (I canoe a lot), rust resistance, and edge retention. It's just plain handy!

I think there will always be a neck knife in my life...just not daily. :)

I wanted to see what all the hype was about so I tried one of those cheapies with the push button tab on the sheath. Unfortunately, I move furniture and I just happened to hit the tab on a dresser I was carrying. As I felt the blade start to slip into my pants I nearly crapped a pickle. I haven't worn a neck knife since!!!

imho they are popular because they are usefull and they are CHEAP - ya can get a livesay woo for <$30, and a cammilius darrel ralph arc lite for <$20, etc

a lot of knife for the $$, and i usually carry my woo in my front RH pocket, unless biking, i wear a necklace so the para cord (or ball chain) clashes lol

but they are usefull, inexpensive knives imho

Out amongst the general public (remember there are LOTS of knife users who have never even heard of Bladeforums.com, much less Talonite, G-10, ATS-34, BG42, etc. etc. etc.), I'd guess that neck knives aren't even a blip on the radar. So I don't even think they qualify as a "fad." With that said, though, I do think they're a passing fad. Why? Because we knife folk are a very trendy and fickle lot. Think about it. There was a time when EVERY man carried a two-blade Barlow style knife, my Grandad included. Years later, everyone seemed to prefer the stockman pattern and Barlows fell out of favor. Then came the Swiss Army knife or utility/scout style knife. Then you were nobody if you didn't have a large Buck 110 on your belt. Who carries those now? Not nearly as many as carry Leatherman tools on their belts, that's for sure. And usually, if someone does prefer a large, one-blade folder, it's clipped to his pocket, not hanging in a belt case. In other words, knife popularity comes and goes in waves. So yes, I think there will come a time when few folks are not talking about neck knives.

They still are....Rob Simonich is one of the top neck knife makers :D

Rob did tell me one time that the natives did wear and use neck knives, so they've been around longer than we know....they've just been updated with modern materials and made with modern technology.

I like neck knives. I almost always carry one when I'm fishing, either a Livesay N.R.G.S. or my Raker Lil' Blue 2 in forged 52100.

They are awfully handy at times. But I suspect one reason they are popular is because they are relatively inexpensive. When I went to Ray Kirk's house, I would have preferred to buy a nice Bowie he had, but I couldn't afford it. I bought the neck knife instead.

I recently acquired an Ed Caffrey EBK that I really like. I'm thinking about getting a Kydex neck sheath made up for it. That will be cool.

I like to carry and use neck knives all the time. I cant carry a knife at work now(thanks to the terrorists) :( But, I carry one once I get off work. I dont like a neck knife to be big and heavy, however. My neck knives have to be slim and lightweight and not too long. Max length of a neck knife for me should be maybe 6.5". Anything longer than that and it looks like you have some kind of stomach tumor when wearing it under your shirt. :)

Neck knives are not a passing fad. They have been around a lot longer than most of us realize and are going to be around a lot longer than we are. I cant imagine going fishing or working out in my garden without carrying a neck knife.

Makes for really quick access. I bought my wife a CRK&T bearclaw to wear when she goes walking and i'm not with her. She loves it. later.

I dont wear neck knives around the neck to much anymore. Although I still buy them as most will easily make great little belt knives or slip in the front pocket of my jeans. My CRKT F4 rides very well in the watch pocket of my jeans.
