Is S30V Steel Any Good In Sebenzas ???

I hope this thread is not about to turn ugly! What i'm hearing is that the average user probably will see no difference between the 2 available steels. There's always a tendency to glorify discontinued features on things like knives, guns ( the pre -1980 Colts are way better than the new ones) Probably for some, but the only way you'll know for sure is buy both , sharpen and use them. I personally suspect CR would not go to the new steel if he did not like it better. Perhaps he could sell more knives if he offered the option in steels? Bart1

The S30V used by CRK favors toughness/impact resistance over edge retention. For a knife which may be used as a combat weapon, digging tool, batoning tool, hacking tool or for things other than cutting or slicing, you will understand why this steel is softer and its advantages. It also makes it easier to sharpen; with that said, the S30V on CRK GREATLY benefit from stropping. If you start stropping the S30V CRKs, you will see MUCH better edge retention, less rolling and FAR less chipping. S30V in general can have its overall edge improved with stropping. You will see amazingly results. While stropping does not do much in the way of sharpening, it does increase your edge retention greatly.

I do like BG -42 better, but that is just me on the seb. However, lately I have been carrying a large regular with S30V and after sharpening it twice on my sharpmaker, I think it performs like it should. It is a slicer plain and simple:D

I agree. Stropping really increased edge retention in my edc tasks. I can go now without touch up for 2 weeks and then use a lansky ultra fine stone. 15 strokes then stropping and it can whittle hair. (I only strop with leather) but it works for me. CRK S30V is very good IMO and in my use.

I am not familiar with stropping. What kind of leather is best, and what's the best way to do it?, Thanks, Bart1
