Is Sherline 5000 mill any good for knifemaking?

Theres no way they can hog material like a Bridgeport but some very fine work has been done using these micro machine tools. Light cuts and some patience and I'm sure you'll find it is better than files. They can even be retrofitted for CNC.

If you want it, I would go for it. At that price I doubt you would loose money reselling. These things are accurate, but not real big. I think you could have some trouble hogging out gard material, but that is based on my use of bigger machines not this one. These little tools cut witht he accuracy of bigger ones, while the taiwan ones tend to require you to do oddball stuff to get precise results, but they work fine also.

These would be your real alternatives, there are many offering these machines, some cheaper and some more expensive:

I use one of these for slotting guards and other small jobs and use carbide cutters. Not as good as a large mill but great for knifemaking and very accurate. I would buy a USA Sherline over an import mini, nice little machine.

Glad to hear you say that (again) Don. I ordered the Model 5400 package deal last week based on some research, the fact that they are made in the U.S,............AND a few comments by you.

It is scheduled for delivery tomorrow.
