ive seen alot of talk on possible new legislation concerning A/O knives and there future here. Many are saying its only a matter of time before they fall under the same legislation as switchblades (hope not). almost all my knives are speed assist kershaws. Im wondering what others have heard and want to know if ill still be able to have these knives in the years to come. Whatever they do im glad kershaw dates there knives so if it does happen my collection can get grandfathered out of the legislation. any thoughts from the other speed safe users?

ha ha!!!! you must have seen that too! yep thats where i saw it first. one thing i really dont agree with is the idea that its just a fad and assisted has no real niche in the industry which i find rediculous. i dont want to bang on spyderco but i wonder if all they said in that thread is true.

I imagine that there already ARE some backwards cities, counties, states who outlaw AO knives in their jurisdiction. Our US Constitution and/or Bill of Rights doesn't seem to matter that much in those kinds of places.

Me too; I think it’s more of just an excuse for them to not add AO’s to their products. They’re plenty successful selling what they have now, so why would they want to change? But to call something that’s been around for years and still growing a fad; you’re just looking for excuses to why you wont produce it yourself.

Just my $.02

There are so many other manfs using an assisted opening system now,
I don't see it happening anytime soon. It takes a lot to change a law or
create a new one.

Gerber, SOG, Chinese, Browning, Buck, Combat Elite, CRKT, Harley, Mossberg, Remington, Schrade, Timberline, Meyerco and the old Camillus'.
I realize some of these don't actually make their own, but they are branded with their logo.

As I recall, Thomas objected to Sal's characterization of AO as a fad, and I got the impression that Sal clarified that AO itself wasn't so much a fad as all latecomers to the AO game jumping on the bandwagon.

I dont think it is a fad. If the legeslation comes in PA I will fight it. Too bad i'm too young for people to listen to.

Aurora, CO recently banned all 'one hand open-able' knives. Basically if you can open it w/ one hand, it's banned. This means most knives made today..... Grip, Spydies, AO's etc. I know a city cop who told me and I don't doubt him.

Correct! Sal gave credit to Thomas and Kershaw as he sees Kershaw as the leader in AO's...something to the effect that it's their market.

So No, not a fad...

While it would be a shame, it really is no big deal, Kershaw would just have to come up with or use another lock. The Axis lock allows for just as fast of an opening and I don't see how it could be made illegal.

And in Nat'l Monuments. The Arch in St. Louis (nat'l park service) actually names Kershaw by name as being prohibited beyond security. IIRC, not speedsafe knives, but Kershaw as a blanket definition. :barf:

i wouldnt say that "Kershaw" itself is banned. a friend of mine took his Lahar onto the Arch. They checked it and let him pass. No biggie. now if it was AO, then who knows what they would have done.............

Oh, I wouldn't say that Kershaw itself was banned - but that's what the NPS lists on the sign. :D I'm sure all they're really looking for are AOs. That said, if you get the right security checker, I'm sure they might see things differently.

well to you, no knife would be banned :D.

though my friend did get a "why are you carrying that? going to hunt some bear?" from one of the guards :D

I don't know... there are some fantasy knives I might ban. Only because they are in such poor taste, of course. :p

I wasn’t referring to Sal (I’ve seen what he said on the matter:thumbup:), but some others who had posted in that thread criticizing it (AO) as a fad and unreliable opening mechanism.

I think an AO Spydie would be sweet!:D

yeah an AO spydie would be cool. will it happen? only if Sal wants it too. if the spydie fans have their way, then it will nvr get off the ground it seems. its here to stay. if Kershaw's popularity with their AO knives isnt proof of it, nothing is

All true; I’m not sure what they have against AO, but they seem to think it would completely ruin a Spydie if they added it. Who knows:confused:
