Is that a knife in your pocket?

If you strike up a friendship with this guy, you ought to give him a new knife maybe, since his blade is all used up.

Funny that you should say that as I did that very thing today :D

I gave him a slightly used Sodbuster type knife I no longer use. He seemed very pleased with it.

I have no reliable way to tell if someone carries a pocket knife. I usually chat them up and try to lead into a discussion on hunting, farming, or fishing. If that is a positve, I will say something like "I remember in school when every boy had a pocket knife." That usually provokes a "I still do" from the knife crowd. Non-knife carrying people usually let that comment slip by.

I rarely see people carrying a knife. I see a pocket clip once every few months...someone with a Kershaw at Petsmart, another with a Benchmade at a Chinese Take-Out etc. People my age, 20 or so, rarely have one. I have a friend who EDC's a Wave and another that carried a Gerber linerlock, but that's it. The one with the Gerber actually asked me to help him pick out a knife, and when we were at the store and I pointed out the Buck stockman knives they had, he said "I just want a normal knife with a pocket clip and stuff." Puts things into perspective. I ended up selling him by back-up Byrd Cara Cara.

My EDC is a Leatherman Micra and Spyderco Military, with my Queen stockman being carried here and there.

That's the same here in the UK. Most younger people don't carry for fear of running foul of the law or they just don't understand how a knife might be useful to them in their daily lives.
Unfortunately judging by the numbers of stabbings we have over here all the wrong people are carrying them. :(

That reminds me of something else. With most my friends, if I were to show them my latest tactical knife from Spyderco or Kershaw, the first thing they'd do is start flicking it open a bunch of times and talk about how you could mess someone up with it. It seems like to most people under the age of 30 that knife and tool are two words that don't equate.

Yep. I can believe that.

I wonder if it's television that's turned everyone into Ninja's these days

Guess we can't turn back the clock. :(

Die hard Mac user here too!…Don't get to meet too many "knife people" in our profession. That makes three that I know of so far. Maybe there's hope for us after all.;)

Another one is here! Mac user, design/DTP guy since '94.
Don't really need neither Strider SNG nor SAK Hiker (except of showing off and making sammiches :D:)
I know 2 or 3 persons that carry SAKs and we presented to another one Endura 4 for B-day.

Jacknife, has there been any kind of grass roots movement by the citizens to repeal any of the more represive laws that have been passed over there? As you say, there seems to be plenty of stabbings, so the anti-knife laws don't seem to work any better than the anti-gun laws they pass over here. Are there any moderate members of the legislature there that have tried to bring things back toward the center?

Fact is, most stabbings are with modified kitchen knives not with knives that collectors and users like. This doesn't register with rabble rousing press reports though.:barf:

I think you MAY be able to tell who likes to carry a knife, we all have that unmistakable aura called self-respect:thumbup:

Jackknife.

I'm afraid there is no sign of politicians doing other than the same old failed policy of banning everything.

I don't know about younger people not having pocketknives. I'm a college student and I know lots of people who carry knives. The vic classic on the key chain is pretty ubiquitous, and in the engineering school leatherman and similar multitools are pretty common. For maybe a quarter of the population you might see a pocket clip. everyone in ROTC has a knife, and usually not knockoffs, but good blades from spyderco and benchmade. I was talking to one guy about his SOG, he used to have a cheapie but the other guys in the corps laughed at him, so he had to learn a little about knives and get something good. The same guys said "I don't know why people act like a knife is a superweapon, it's just a useful thing to have around. One friend grew up on a farm, he carries around a slipjoint. Another guy I know was in the army, and is going to school now. He always has a leatherman and benchmade auto, both from his army days. I'm the only guy who collects knives, and switches around what I carry, but people have them. Maybe not everyone, maybe not even a majority, but a pretty large percentage. You won't notice unless you pay attention.

Most of the younger guys I see when out and about have the ubiquitous pocket clip visible, but of cheap-o knock-offs. I also see a fair number of Buck 110's in belt pouches, and also multitools - usually Gerbers.

At Mystic, CT not far from my home they have a living museum that is a replica whaling port complete with c. 1800's vessels and shops. The people working the sailing ships all had Grohmann Canadian boat knives with accompanying marlin spikes. The blacksmith had a Grohmann #1.

That's good to hear. Perhaps there is hope.

I'm not really an expert on trends amoung young people these days :)

as a college student majoring in art i see people using a knife all the time the sad thing is that most of them are just box cutters or just razor blades but every so often i see some one with a pocket knife. I have used my pocket knifes for sharpening my pencils for the last 2 years.

on a side note im now thinking about using my knife and trying to think why i use it left handed and keep it in my right pocket and yet have no idea why lol

Good to see you younger guys here on this forum cool69rtcharger.
You've got many years of knife use ahead of you, enjoy them.
What pocket knife do you use?
Are you into the good stuff yet? Stockmen, Trappers, Sodbusters etc. ;)

Hey! Don't forget the PEANUT!:D

I carry at least two and sometimes more knives at all times. A friction folder on my belt another friction folder around my neck whos handle is a grizzly claw and an old Hammer brand peanut in my pocket. My Lady carries a damascus straight knife that I made for her in her purse. Most people in my neck of the woods carry a knife or two.

I guess the environment you live in does have a baring on whether, and what you carry.
Interesting that you carry friction folders, I never really see there advantage over slip joints myself.

Might start a thread on that subject, get some Pro's and Con's :)

Thanks Robin.

Regards to you too from the Wild West......of the UK :)

Political corectness may change the lives of the younger generation, but the old codgers like myself will be too stuborn too change a life time habit.

Well heres an odd one for you...
Im 22 and wear a suit 4 days a week.
my buck 327 or my camilus stockman are in one pocket or another.

Granted, Im not the "typical" young person in that when im not at work, a Walther pistol usually hides near one of the aforementioned knives.
