Is the Asp Street Defender pepper spray a good compliment to a folding knife?

I don't carry one, but my buddy does. He puts his keys on the end and so its usually in the hand on the way to the car, house etc. It's also stout enough to use as a kuboton.
When he tested it in his backyard he said that sprayed well without much side mist IIRC.

I carry a 10 oz. can of bear spray, 8 seconds worth of a 30ft. cloud.

personally id rather have an amped up surefire to blind the person, im not a big fan of pepper spray, ive been oc gassed a few times and i dont think it would keep me from killing someone i was intenet on killing.

whereas 200 lumens to night adjusted vision F@$%ing hurts also it has the nice utility of being a useable light source.

I have seen several people sprayed with the BEAR spray, WOW is all I can say. If you think if you think that you could with stand that at close range your overconfident. I saw a group of guys get sprayed in front of the door at the bar I used to work at. Devestation, two of the three guys had to be sent to the ER in a wagon due to breathing difficulties. They were sprayed at close range 3 feet or so and it was like nothing I've ever seen, other than a gun shot to the face. Which I also witnessed at Mardi Gras at the same spot. .38 cal about 5 feet away, one shot and the biggest cowboy bouncer I ever worked with about 6'5 and 275 pounds (solid) went down like a lead ballon, buried him 2 days later, he died on the spot.

Holy crap! Maybe I should rethink the Bear Spray! Spray and sprint perhaps? Thanks for the heads up, although it does sound effective. My luck I'd be downwind, I'm sure of it.:o However, I have always known not to stick around if I ever let it loose.;)

If you feel you need it, then get it. Pepper spray gives you more option in the continuum of force against an attacker. First the pepper spray, then if your attacker is still determined enough to kill you, feel free to aerate him with your CQC7.

Does the asp street defender really shoot out to 10 ft.?

I am considering a CRKT Hissatsu folder also since it's purpose is for SD.

During my short stint in LE I've had the privilledge of being on the receiving end of CS gas a couple of times when we practice riot control drills. Not sure if thats the same as the pepper sprays they have in the US (pepper sprays are banned here, at least to civillians) but t hurts like a mother... My eyes, nose and mouth was running like a river. I've only seen it used in real life once and from what I've seen if a guy is truly determined to hurt you he will still be able to do so even after a generous spray, this is especially true if the suspect is mentally deranged or under the influence. Still, I feel its a lot better than not having anything...

I've carried a Street Defender for several years (a Key Defender before that) and had to use it once. One of my friends has used his twice. Our experience is that the Street Defender's OC is pretty concentrated out to about 6-8 feet but at 10+ feet it slows/disperses. However, it was very effective against all three aggressors and ended the problems immediately. Unfortunately, in one instance the gas from about a one second burst got sucked into a building's ventilation system and caused some distress for a bunch of people.

Given its size and utility as a palm stick, I like the Street Defender pretty well. A big container of bear spray has a lot more range and capacity so that's what I have in the vehicle. But for carry around town, the ASP is much more convenient.

Pepper spray scares me, especially when it's on the keys without any sort of covering for the nozzle. It's just not safe.

I used to be a shift supervisor in a grocery store and I was in the office one night counting tills and getting everything ready for the next morning's deposit when I heard a scream from one of the registers. I ran out to find one my cashiers flailing around screaming.

I ran over to her and asked what the hell just happened? Turns out, idiot customer lady handed the casher her keys with her store discount card. She had a can of pepper spray on her key chain with no cap. The cashier didn't know this, took the keys, inadvertantly pushed the spray buttom and got maced.

The cashier had a mild allergic reaction to it and I had to send her to this hospital. I wasn't too nice to the lady and asked her flat out why she didn't keep it covered. She didn't have an answer.

My eyes were burning from it for several days and the store had a peppery funk to it for about a week.

I agree with the bear spray, you want something you can use at least 30 feet away and not have to have them open their eye while you use an eye dropper to be effective. Even then it's no gaurentee to work as wind and people's tolerance can be very high. Personnaly I'd just use a gun... but that's just me...

imho OC is only one tool in the chest for SD, though in my experience it works well it doesnt work on everyone, bear spray or not.

my fav brands are fox, punch and deftec.

+1 on a good Surefire.

Look at the E2DL.

The ASP has a safety latch that is much more reliable than the average spray can one might buy at a gun store. In years of carry I have never had any problem with it. It is nothing like the type of OC container that psychopomp described.

A couple of my LEO friends also speak well of the Fox brand OC but they carry it in a bulkier belt holster. Furthermore, the ASP makes a better impact weapon than the average Fox canister.

I agree that a high SHU rating is a good thing. However, from what LEO friends have reported, once you get over a million you generally have effective OC. The ASP is around 2 million, if I recall correctly, and I have heard only positive reports about its sufficiency. I personally feel that other factors can be quite important because a convenient 2m SHU OC dispenser that you carry all the time will be more useful than a hotter unit that you leave in the car/house because it is less convenient to carry.
