Is the BK10 the perfect compromise?

Hey all, I am looking to get my first Becker knife and am having a really tough time deciding between the BK2 and BK7. I like the length of the BK2, although I've heard it isn't much of a slicer, and it's thickness is sometimes overkill. I love the look and feel of the BK7,...the weight and thickness...it's just a little long for me. This brings me to the Bk10. The bk10 to me, seems like it is a more finesse, agile version of the bk2. Am I on the right track here? I really want to like the BK7 but I feel it is just too long. This would be primarily a camping/hiking knife, one that would be worn on a belt....but also a worthy combat knife if need be (just because that sounds cool ha). So i guess it is down to the BK2, BK7, or BK10. Decisions!

Thanks

Have you had a chance to handle either knife? Even though it is bigger, I chose the BK7 because it felt better to me in the hand than the BK10, and the size difference, IMHO, was negligible.

If this is your first BK, then I'd be inclined to start with the BK2. You know you're going to catch the disease like the rest of us, and this way you'll be on board with all the excitement rather than just wondering/guessing. You'll have BK's stoutest knive-------the Beast-------and spend months pounding the crap out if it. Once the newness wears off, you've practiced all your knife skills, and maybe even customized your knife, THEN start shopping for the next BK. That's just how it works. You won't actually know what your favorite BK is until you've owned a few. Sorry, that's just how it works. :)

For full disclosure, I don't own a BK10 yet, but do own the BK2,7,9,11,13,16,17 (actually multiples of many) so I'm not sure what the BK10 has to offer. I'll own one someday, but I'm VERY happy with the BK7 as my all-arounder. I wouldn't have known that however, if it was my only BK. The BK7 actually was my very first BK (lucky guess) but I didn't know how much I loved it until comparing it to the others. They all have their own charm and specific uses. But IMO the path to enlightenment starts with the Beast to form your frame of reference.

Clear as mud? :D

My first Becker was the BK2, great knife, heavy and thick. My out doors time currently doesn't really require me to proccess a lot of wood, or build many shelters......doesn't mean I don't ;) But once I got my hands on a BK10, the 2 was retired. Still thick enough to baton, but thin enough to do finer work, and it's lighter, which was a plus for me. The 2 was constantly pulling my pants down.

Bet that made for some interesting scenery for the other hikers! :p

When I bought the BK2 I was looking for something like the BK10, not that I was disappointed with the BK2. I was very excited for the BK10 and got my order in the very minuet I heard they were released (no joke). That said, on my last camping trip I only really used my BK9 and my Mora Companion knife. I played around with several of my other knives just to try them but I kept goting back to the BK9 and Mora.

If I were going on a hike I'd leave the BK9 and grab my BK2/10/16 or maybe my Ka-Bar Navy MK1 or something like that just to have a stout knife in the event of an emergency but likely most of my cutting tasks would be handled by my humble mora or leatherman or my EDC folder.

Between the BK2 and the BK7, yes, the 10 is right in the middle.

I have a BK-2, and a BK-10, and my next Becker will be a BK-7. I don't believe in compromise.

3 replies, each scoring 1 for the knives in question, lol. Thanks guys. I guess it is really a preference thing. Even though I'm a big dude 6'-2 (200), I just feel like the bk7 will be pretty huge dangling around. (ha). Will I be able to do some of the much finer tasks with the BK2 or is truley to thick and bulky? I'm not looking to pry open car doors with this thing.

Why compromise when you can just have it all?

Agreed. Just get the whole fam damily!

At 6'3" and 245 (for now) I personally like a big knife. If I could EDC the BK7 legally, I would. :D

Have you looked at the Doug Ritter/Becker collab? It falls fight in the middle, but costs more than either of them due to the low production numbers.

Go with the BK10 or the aforementioned BK12 (Doug Ritter RSK MK2), either of those will put you where you want to be. The 7 is a victim of it's all-around usefulness, and the 2 is a bit of a beast for most things.

If there is a question between the 2 and the 10, get the 10. I have a 2, and I love it immensely, however, when I bought my 2 the 10 had not been released yet. I would have gotten the 10 first.

On that same note, since I have a 2, I see no justification for the 10 at this point. I know this doesn't make much sense but I need to concentrate on getting all the smaller more practical blades before I worry about any BK blade longer than 5 inches. Yes, I have a BK5 but I got that for free, and I don't use it for anything outside food prep so it doesn't count.

For what you are describing I would say go with the 10... I would take the time to say why and all that but I think everyone here has pretty much said it. It is just exactly what you are looking for.

Same here. If people weren't such pansies I'd just go everywhere with my BK9 and a .45 right where everyone can see.

That RSK looks like a dang fine knife, but for the cost I can just about get two Ka-Bar Beckers. I'm sure it does not disappoint though.
