Is the BK2 right for me?

The knife showed up today!!! I'm actually really happy with teh weight and handles...not sure why anyone would really complain about either. Anyway, I guess the one Amazon sent me had this plastic sheath. I guess it will dull the knife until a channel is cut in it? How fast does it dull the blade? Is it really that bad? I really don't want to spend the money for a new sheath if I don't have to.

The sheaths are a fiberglass reinforced nylon and the fiberglass is what dulls the knives. They reduced the fiberglass content a few years ago so it's not as bad anymore but if you take some sandpaper and open up the channel it should prevent the edge from rubbing the sheath. Most guys are perfectly happy with their factory sheaths. I like the design but I think I got one of the old ones because it dulls the edge pretty quick. I just got everything I need to start bending my own kydex so I'm going to make my own.

Oh and we expect to see some pics, even though we've all seen and own a bk2. We still wanna see pics. They're like boobs. If you've see one, you wanna see the rest of them too. hahaha:D

Depends on what sort of plastic the sheath is made from I reckon. The only dulling I've experienced has been with the BK-11/14 sheaths. None of my others; full sized and Tweeners, have had this happen with the stock factory sheaths.

The reason this happens with the BK-11/14 knives is because the factory sheaths contain glass in the composition. Kydex does not.

Damn! choking on coffee again.

I never had an issue with my factory sheath dulling the blade.
However, my method of unsheathing does not allow much blade drag.

Although the BK2 is a beast and is an awesome knife if you are going to have just one, I think that there are a lot of other considerations to make based on the length of these excursions. I would not want to chop and split wood with a BK2 for 5 plus days at a time. That's some serious calorie burning and as awesome as the knife is, a two tool set would be more efficient for you if the extra weight isn't an issue.

I'm in the woods 6 days a week at the moment and I carry a BK5, large Victorinox, and a Cold Steel Pipe Hawk with me every day. The Pipe hawk is great at cross-cutting, I can baton decently with the BK5, and the Victorinox is great for a variety of other tasks. I would suggest this kind of approach. You'll spend many times the calories processing all of your wood with just a BK2. In my opinion, the Tomahawk is a more versatile tool than a Kukri so maybe it's something you'll want to consider.

I had a ton of dulling on my 2. Well, the blade was dull from the factory (and the grind and angles are off) and I figured (at that time) I was going to just cut a channel. I spent about 30 minutes drawing and sheathing and I cut a pretty good channel, which solved the problem (I think, LOL). But I abandon the factory sheath for a Spec Ops Combat Master and never plan to use the stock sheath so, the dulling and my effort to combat it, is moot. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes. For my 14, I have developed a method of un-sheathing and re-sheathing which doesn't dull the blade at all. I'm also notorious for not allowing people to un-sheath and re-sheath the 14 when I'm showing it off too. ;)

Good call on the BK2. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!
