Is the BK5 the best?

If I had to pick a big knife for EDC in your situation, twould be da King.

Otherwise, 17 gets the nod for my outdoorsman belter.

I can't even use my 9 in the yard without my "neighbors" griping about it.

Paint it pink. Problem solved

Shotgun, the weight of the BK5 has not been an issue. At the same time, I feel like I have literally been in a terrible fight and gotten my &#$ beaten at the end of every day. It has occurred to me that even saving 4 or 5 ounces of weight on my belt might make a bit of difference after walking up and down hills all day and moving boulders. :)

No I hear ya. I've been going lighter and lighter as well. I think you should try the 15 out and sell it if you don't like it. You may loose chopping ability but that's what batons are for. :D

I think I would end up getting the 16 over the 15. I like the drop point on a smaller knife. I am hard on things. You know, I wouldn't want to break the tip off.

Oh, and I should have addressed the baton issue. The issue is that I have brush ALL OVER our property. A lot of it is long and spindly. You just can't baton it. A hawk sucks on it as well. You need something in between and the BK5 is the right size and weight to cut through it quick with well placed and strong swipes. I think that a BK9 would be more effective than a BK15 when it comes to getting work done out there. I just can't stop and look for a baton regularly and then find a solid place to cut through with it. Time is of the essence!:D

That comment right there solidified my thoughts that you more than likely have already found your "perfect" knife for your situation. Looking at what you are using it for, I dont see the 9 being of enough advantage to warrant buying one, especially when you might be able to put that cash towards something more useful at the moment. If you have the money to spare, then I might give the king a try, but if not, id stick with that 5 your packin'.

Yeah, that's pretty much where I am with it. I like some of the options the 9 would give me and it should would save time since I wouldn't need to go fetch my hawk as much. Also, I imagine it would make quick work of some of the brush out here.

At the same time, I see limited uses with it with one hand. I can choke up on the 5 and use it for pretty much anything you would use a smaller knife for. I think wrist strength plays a big part here though. the other day, we were fitting a new double axe haft and I used the 5 to carve down the portion that goes into the eye. Honestly, I used everything from sandpaper, an electric sander, files, rasps, and a grinder with a metal wheel (didn't have a wood wheel), and none of them worked remotely as well as the 5 did. And this would be the reason I always have it with me. :D

If your interested in borrowing a 9 for a few weeks and putting it to good use, give me a yell. IDC at all to send you one of mine to try out.
I know that after this thread, im gonna order me a 5 to compliment my 15 and hawk. I think those three will make a great combo in the bush.
