Is the BM senior Griptilian overrated?

I have four full-size Grips and the only one that had issues was the 551H2O. The sharpness wasn't up to par and the action is still a bit stiff. The plasticky sound isn't a problem; it's plastic! Get over it. The Grip's a great knife. Still, I've seen the Wilkins grips and I'm going to try to mod my OD green 550HG with micarta scales. Just because I can.

The full size Grip was one of my first "real" knives. I think it's a great utility / large EDC knife. As for deployment - mine is great - there is perhaps the tiniest amount of play but I love the axis lock and am a fan of the knife in general.

Personally I think it is an underrated knife due to the perception the handles create. In all honestly I think it is one of the best $100 knives available illustrating Fit and Finish (hit and miss sometimes) good quality lock and good blade steel that you get for a $100.

My first BM was my 551 in 440C 7+ yr ago - and it came, out of the box, so dull it needed heat to cut butter. Nice, mechanically - but I just never warmed up to it's thick plastic-like sides. I eventually bought a Spydie Sharpmaker, and it got as sharp as it should have been. Oddly, my second BM - a 201 Activator+ fb in D2 - also came dull - and was the impetus to get the Sharpmaker. Well, that and a drawerful of dulled Vic SAKs. I have bought a boatload of BM's since - and all were razor sharp - go figure. At any rate, I like the Bone Collector, particularly the 15020-1 green/black G10, far better - thicker steel - D2, too. Actually, my least favored BM is that 551.

The standard Grip is one of the best folders I have ever used. Of the six I own, not one has any issues. They are comfortable in hand, secure in lock-up and a pleasure to use.

+1

I think you can get them even cheaper than a $100 depending on the model.

With the price hike of Benchmade's I think they moved themselves out of the competative market in my opinion. $80+ for a Griptillian is rediculous.. for $20 I can get a Spyderco Para2 that is 3 times the knife. I have a mini-grip which is a good little pocket knife for throwing in the pocket w/o the clip. The full size Grip is bulky and mine too suffers from a bad Axis lock (hard to open/close with one hand). When they were $60 they were a decent deal.. at over $80 I'll pass everyday and twice on Sundays. YMMV

I just got the Ritter Grip and am loving it. A tad of center but no other complaints. It's giving my para 2 competition for pocket time and to me that says a lot.

I did have the mini for a bit and while it was silky smooth, it was just too small for me.

I'm in the same camp as the guys who aren't fans of plastic. Anything but plastic, please. If plastic has to be used, don't price the knife over 50 bucks.
