Hey, thanks for the info guys. I suppose it's time for an update on my Classic Bowie quest:

I've commissioned a custom knife from Terry Primos! :) :) :)

After seeing the incredible diversity of custom knives out there, I decided that for THIS project, I wanted to choose a maker who already makes Bowies in the very particular style I'm looking for.

Along the way, I've made contact with a few other knifemakers with whom I look forward to doing future business on other types of knives (Barry Jones and Alan Folts). Very professional, very helpful, and damn nice looking knives.

I'd also like to mention that I've had extended email correspondence with forumites who were also quite helpful. What a community we have here!

Now the specifics on my soon to be Bowie:
The knife just finished the forging stage, and it will have a 10 1/2" flat ground 1085 blade. The guard will be nickel silver, and the handle will be Arizona Desert Ironwood. Terry is a hell of a guy, and he's not only an gifted craftsman but a perfectionist in his endless scientific pursuit of bladesmithing methodology. He's honest to a fault, and he'll give you a book's worth of information on metallurgy in one phone call.

I've asked Terry to photograph the knife at different stages for me during the construction, and I'll post a picture as soon as I can.

Thanks again to everybody who helped me, and to all those with whom I've talked.

Bowies are fighters, not utility or work knives. Sure they can do other things, but are fighters first. When you take away some of its fighting characterics its no longer a bowie knife. If you need a work knife get a camp knife.

Regards,
David

i have a cold steel bowie, stag handle etc. new in box. [No Advertising here - Spark]

Kind of wondering why you would want to advertise a knife for sale on a thread where the last post was almost a year ago. Actually, it is against the rules to advertise knives for sale unless you have a gold or knifemaker membership and even then only on the appropriate for sale forums.

i did not notice the date and no i am not trying to start a business. if you want to get a real bowie, check out this link to a guy that makes the most beautiful custom bowie's i have ever seen. no, i don't know the guy and am not connected. i only got to see his work once.

but all I have is this carbon steel knife with a little meteorite mixed in, so if you want stainless, you are gonna hafta wait a couple hunnerd years before you head for the sandbar."

Now THAT'S a "wait time" fer a knife.

:)

I have a nice reproduction (1 of 200) of the bowie called the Iron Mistress. This is a working knife. Have you heard of it. Runs $200 or so.

Um, did you guys notice the date of this thread? It dates back to 2001 and the original poster last posted in 2002. I doubt he is going to answer you.
