Is the Caly Jr. ever coming back?

It's a good question, but I'm curious why you'd want a Caly Jr. since the introduction of the Caly 3?

Did you mean Caly Sr?

The Caly Jr. already made a recent "come-back" in the form of a distributor exclusive featuring laminated ZDP-189 steel and black FRN scales.

I want a Jr. because it's lighter and cheaper. I missed out on the ZDP models. I'm pretty new to knives.

I wish they would bring back the grey handled Calypso Jr. in just standard good old VG-10. I think they were the best Caly Jr. ever offered. Plus, back in the day you could get them for around $45. I think $100 is too much for the Caly 3.

I think the Calypso Jr. was, and still is, a better knife than the Caly 3. Something is different with the blade shape in the new Caly 3 that I do not like.

I have to say that I'm completely agree with you on this one.

Believe Sal posted a few weeks back, either here or on the Spyderco forum, that IF the Caly Jr. ever returns it will be revamped to D4/E4 type construction. Not sure if I consider that an improvement or not, one of the things I love about the Caly Jr. is its lightness, but that's not my decision to make. Another comissioned run, like the black ZDP one, might still be possible.

I have to admit that the CJ FRN with VG10 is a very nice and not expensive version. I also like the lightness of the linerless handle. I do like the C3 with CF but IMHO it is more money than I would normally pay. It's good I've bought a few of the old ones at the lower price. Now once I've given them all away I will need to find a replacement :p

Absolutely. Hopefully, if Spyderco uses a liner it will be as light as possible. Perhaps a half liner that goes just past the lock? A 2mm blade, like the Centofantes, a tip-up wire clip and the much underappreciated frn would add up to edc perfection.

As much as i like the CalyIII, the GrayCalypsoJR is special to me. As you said thin, light, VG10, it has a high place with me.

Well, I really prefer the blade shape of the Caly 3. The swedge grind, pointy spot at the top of the thumb ramp, and lack of traction grooves on the ramp and choil of the Calypso Jr. were not selling points for me. But, there are times when its feather-like weight, wafer thinness, and attractive FRN scales compensates for two of those shortcomings, and a few minutes with some sandpaper corrects the third. At other times the squared spine, rounded hump and traction grooves, plus the more hand-filling thickness of the handle make me reach for the Caly 3. I think they fill different niches and serve different needs, which is why I wonder if blurring those differences by making the Calypso Jr. thicker and heavier is really a good idea. Then again, as I've learned before, my tastes are not "average". Heck, the thing I would most like to see would be a clipless, dentless, damascus bladed, bolster and scales version of the Caly 3. :D

I carried my FRN Calypso Jr. today and it is a great light knife. I would love to see the original Micarta Calypso Jr. with a handle color other than black and a newer steel upgrade. I like the new Caly III's alot but the original is my favorite....

I wish they would bring the regular grey Calypso Jrs back and leave them with VG-10 in them. They would sell for $40-$50 and would be perfect. I don't like all the newer versions with laminated steel and things. They cost too much money and there is nothing wrong with VG-10. I forgot all about the fishscale handles too. They look classy and work well.

I agree with steven andrews. The Calypso Jr didn't need any fixing.
