Is the cost of our hobby about to go up?

The Deacon is correct. In theory, if your state charges sales tax, you're supposed to send the state a check for the tax when you buy from out-of-state.

My church in Iowa tried to do this so that we would be in full compliance with the laws (giving unto Ceasar etc.). The state revenue department had troubles actually dealing with it. It seems that this was a highly unusual thing for them to deal with. Nobody knew the procedure.

tax. It's not unusual for money to be taxed five or six times in America.

Some countries, in Europe especially, roll all that into one tax, a sort of super sales tax, called Value Added Tax, or VAT. Americans often cringe when they see the VAT rates in Europe, but, in reality, we're not really paying that much less when you look at how much we pay tax on tax on tax here in American.

Sorry Mr. Gollnick: That super sales tax is just a national sales tax, most countries in europe charge 16 to 20%. They also take 50% at the national level income tax and state or province income taxs and property taxs and, and, and, God save us from the European model.

Those of us with small businesses seldom have excess income to worry about. When I have, I often find the need to loan it back to the business to keep the business afloat. The cost of providing health insurance to employees is another form of taxiation and it grows every year

all the best,

I didn't realize I was going to stir up such a big political debate!

The newspaper article I read was not specific on what sort of taxes were being suppressed by the current exemption. Whatever tax might get passed in the future, I am sure it will get passed on to the consumer. That's the way it always works.

Property tax is one of the most reasonable taxes out there.

Why?

Because, for the most part, the money goes to your local city hall where locally-elected officials, poeple you could probably talk to if you wanted to, put it to work for you buying things that you want and need such as the road that lets you drive to your house, the fire engine that comes if your house is on fire, the police officers who patrol your neighborhood trying to (and succeeding at) reducing crime in your neighborhood, the street lights that light your neighborhood at night, and the park down the street where your children play.

I really don't know what goes on where you live, but your statement is completely false when applied to Buffalo, NY.

Property tax here is completely absorbed by Medicaid. It does'nt even cover the whole tab, only about two-thirds.

Meanwhile, the majority of homeowners are also getting deductions from their already heavily taxed income to pay for THEIR OWN insurance. (Blue Cross/Blue Shield, etc.)

Add the wonderful "Garbage tax", taxes on all your utilities, taxes on all your clothes and household items, and tell me we are'nt taxed to death? We pay $5.00 in taxes PER PACK of cigarettes as a SIN tax. Also on alcohol. Also taxation on every aspect of vehicle ownership and maintenance, title tax, purchase tax, oil is taxed, parts and labor are taxed, fuel is taxed...

Yeah, this is fair.

And yes, THANK GOD for the Indian reservations.
