Is the Edge Pro Apex really worth the Money?

Re-beveling time is directly related to how much metal you need to take off. If it's a lot, then it will take some time. I've taken my CS Trailmaster and lots of Busses, Swamprat, Queens, etc., down, and it's not too bad if you take your time. Queen stockmans take about 5-10 min per blade, even though they are D2. Trailmaster took a couple of hours, I had a LOT of metal to remove. But it's worth it.

I think the EP is well worth it, and I wouldn't be without it. I still use other methods, but will never give it up, and hope to get the pro model some day.

If you get into re-profiling, do it in a patient mood. That was a short 3" blade on that Razel and really only one side of it needed a big chunk worked out. Took me about two hours easy.

For something that heavy to do it again, I think I may get an EdgePro blank and epoxy a mill file on it...seriously, it would have worked really well I'm sure.

I've got an Ontario 18" field machete I need to do and I'm not doing that one with a 120 stone I can tell you that. Actually I may just do that one with sandpaper and rubber pad.

You can epoxy just about any type of sharpening abrasive to an EdgePro blank; stones, ceramics, diamond, even sandpaper and leather for compound. Just try to keep your sizes about the same. That said, I mounted some 3"wide stones on a blank and they worked well too! No reason not to use a file. The beauty of the EdgePro is that it allows you to maintain a consistent angle.

and the edge pro diamond stones are great for that too. i've just received mines (after two month and 2 package lost, thanks Mr Dale for the patience again) and they work great. don't let the rating used fool you, the fine is WAAAAY faster than the 120 grit stone, really way way faster, not really broken in yet so can't tell for sure about the finish. the finer one looks like fine dmt. perhaps a touch coarser.

Now, only after I ordered the mounted DMT from Jende, do I find this out. The one from Jende costs like double. :p

yep but jende's are 2" wide dmt. EP are 1" eze lap. they work fine really, but time will tell if they last as much as DMT continuous diamonds.

I just spent about an hour reprofiling a Gerber LST Magnum I've had since the 80's. Had a good ding near the base of the blade so it took a while. Did a pretty shallow primary and polished to 1000 grit, then did about a 25-30 deg secondary and polished that to 1000 too.

It's now the sharpest edge I've done since getting the EdgePro. I can just push it through the edge of a sheet of paper.

It's not as nice as that edge that 230 showed above, but it's getting very close ;-).

It's all about the patience with this. A nice easy, steady touch and patience until the grind is just dead even. it will show you how a blade that appears even, isn't.

It's totally worth the time too. I've realized that I've never truly had a "sharp" knife before for sure.

I ate an apple with the razel last night just for fun and it was just peeling paper thin slices off of it. I was very surprised at how well such a thick profile was slicing something honestly.

I've been using my Edge Pro Apex 4 about a year now and have sold both Sharpmaker 304 and benchstones. Don't need them any more. For 154cm, S30V and just about anything other than D2, it's a breeze. M2, M4, 1095 no big deal...something about D2 just takes more patience.

Yeh, I hear that DMTs are better quality than eze laps. And yes, they are 2" wide.

So I probably made the right choice. :D

IMHO, the Edge-Pro would be a bargain at twice the price. I startede with an APEX, and liked the system so well that I upgraded to a Pro. :p

With a 1X30 HF belt sander for the few that I convex, I have all I've ever need.:thumbup:
