I know ESEE was just a name change but is it the exact same knife? Same warranty, same thickness, same steel, etc? I found the RAT 5 on amazon for under 90$ and I can't find the ESEE 5 for under about 140$ so i feel like the ESEE is better?

They are different.

The ESEE-5 or older RC-5 are identical. The Ontario RAT-5 is thinner, has a choil, and a cheaper coating. It was designed by Jeff Randall of ESEE Knives, but he has no affiliation with Ontario any longer.

The nicer and stronger knife of the two is the ESEE-5 IMO, it is well worth the difference in price.

^^^This.

You might consider the Becker/KaBar BK-2 'Companion'. It comes with a serviceable grip - the Micarta shown is ~$35-$40 extra. Here is mine with my older sheathed RC-5 (Now ESEE-5.):

I bought my BK-2 for $90 locally - with the extra grips. I have seen it for $66 shipped. It slices better - the slicker finish helps. Both are US made of 1095 steel - and 5" edge - .25" stock. I'm glad I bought the BK-2 - but I have no intention of saying goodbye to the RC-5, either!
