Am I the only one who doesn't get the fidget? Can someone shed some light on why we all need one? These are popping up everywhere and I need to know why.

They're fun, some people just need to keep their hands busy, fidget toys help with that urge.

Two words: conference calls.

I like all manner of mindless hand toys when on these life-draining wastes of time, including:
  • Kendama
  • Begleri
  • Fidget spinners
  • Yo-yos
  • and of course . . . flipping knives

I've got to open my eyes more. I had to look up fidget toy, I thought the OP meant knives. I don't know that that phenomena has actually hit us down under yet.

It was actually knife companies that turned me on to fidget spinners. You see ultra-expensive titanium spinners from some of them on the big knife stores listings pages sometimes, and also on the exchange here.

Yeah, so I'm seeing. Nick Shabazz appears to have done a video on them, too. I have a lot to learn, senpai!

Whatever floats your boat, I'm always using my hands at work, there's always something to fidget with, worst case scenario I can always fidget with my biro and get ink all over my hands. Come to think of it, I ... don't have any special pens, I just use whatever is available.

Never heard of this. Being ADHD and having both anxiety issues and RLS, flipping/flicking my knives keeps me sane.

If I don't have something to mess with, I'm constantly moving my legs while sitting, crossing them, bouncing, as well as wringing my hands etc. Cell phone/tablet/computer doesn't help in the least.

I have a thinklet its my favorite fidget toy thus far. also have a few others including a copper rotoblade stubby. helps a lot to fidget.

When these started getting popular I thought it was a pretty bizarre thing, but then I remembered how much I fiddle with my knives, especially balisongs and AXIS lock knives (and autos back when I owned a bunch). And how many times I cut myself doing it (even when I wasn't drunk). Can't cut yourself with those spinners.

dont get it.

guess for folks trapped in offices and apartments who cant go outside often and into the woods and swamps and use their tools. also folks who have nervous energy problems. imagine it would fill that need as well.

The best fidget tools that I used when I was a desk pilot was a mechanical pencil and a pad of paper.

I'd take notes, write down ideas or thoughts that I either wanted to present, or conversely, resist.

Also write down contact names, phone numbers and email addresses, as well as random concepts that I might want to explore. I'd stay engaged in the discussion and thoughts discussed.

And those two fidget tools usually paid off.

If you can sell your doodles you must be a pretty good drawer. :)

The spinner is no doubt an extension of the edc top craze. It has pretty much taken over as the latest craze with ones that range from budget ones to high end customs and everything in between. I can see the appeal of these little toys. Like the top, not only are they functional when bored, they also double as a fashionable edc token. Ive been kinda tempted to try one. Either that or an Antsy lab fidget cube.

The Instagram EDC craze really bugs me, but...I made a set of Begleri beads and have to admit I find myself fidgeting with them quite a bit. A lot less intimidating than flipping a Bali or other knife, and safer too;)

Wouldn't be surprised if some used them as a dexterity exercise as well. As with anything there is a continuum of price depending on the wants, needs and budget of the user. From coffee mugs to ties. (or knives)

I think the actual reason we are seeing more of them is that low production, high availability distribution makes it profitable for a small operation to make and sell them. Its an easy market to hit, no restrictions, and a lower technical bar to clear, unlike knives which have a few more important steps. So right now every T, D and H are making them, As to if lots of people are actually buying them or not, I'm not so sure, but EDCers are like crows, we collect shiny things, and then show them off.
