Is the fidget legit?

Whomever came up with this idea is a marketing genius; some plastic do-dad with tactile "instruments" on all sides made in china for pennies, sells for $4.99=money. As for who would want / need one, I've worked with several people who suffer from "cluster" headaches and migraines, and would always manipulate something when the headache would start; they stated that it helped in some way.

Thing is, you can make any of this stuff yourself, no need to buy it.

Nothing new. Fidget stones and beads have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. They are also called worry stones or beads.

You could play pocket pool. It's free.

For years I would spin a pen around my thumb while I was in meetings. I don't any more for some reason, probably because everybody just sat there and stared at me while I was doing it. Therefore, I understand fidget gadgets. I just wouldn't pay that much for them! A 79 cent Bic worked the best.

That seventy-nine cent Bic is great for me sometimes but, it drives the old woman straight up the wall. Sometimes I have to bounce my leg, and like one of the other guys here I'd have to move my legs around. I'm an old man now, and it was just a couple of years ago that I was finally diagnosed as being ADHD. I've always known that I had learning disabilities. I always had troubles in school but, nobody ever got down to all my problems until much, much later.

I just found out about fidget-toys recently. I have bought several of the spinners, and I love em. I found an expensive one, and just had to have one. I had to wait for one because they sell them so fast they run out frequently. It is a real algebra precision wonder, and is my favorite. The thing will spin forever. I sit and play with that thing, and listen to bluegrass music.

Yup, I don't have any problem with people wanting well crafted, high quality items. My wife thought I was crazy paying $25 for an Atwood Prybaby and now they go for several times that. I was just using the Bic as an example, because it worked the best. A nice Fountain Pen can just be too heavy and unbalanced to be good at spinning around my thumb.

For me it is not only about fidgeting, but about the importance of play in my daily life. At my desk you will usually find a few different toys such as tops, spinners, yoyos, a racquetball, and even a small Nerf gun. It's just something I never really grew out of and I think it has benefited my life a great deal. Playing helps me think more clearly. I suffered a TBI a little over a decade ago and I am still often plagued with severe headaches and spells of agitation. If I spin a top and time it, or bounce a ball, or build some Legos or something, it helps immensely. I know there are some that really look down on the idea of grown men playing with toys, but I put no such limitations on myself and make no apologies for it. Honestly, I actually feel sorry for people who think they are too mature to play.

On a side note, my middle-school aged daughter saw me watching some YouTube vids on spinners and really took an interest. She proposed an idea to her teacher to build some in tech class using the 3-D printer. They're selling them for 5 bones a pop and they've now raised enough money to buy a few extra new 3-D printers. Pretty cool IMO

I understand them. I personally have never owned a spinner that I ended up keeping. Just didn't see them as being worth the money, and the ones I owned cost me $60 or less. Can't imagine ever spending $200 on a Torqbar/etc., but to each his own. I think I might make a paracord Begleri next, those look neat. Like many others here I have always had attention/concentration issues and before I always spun pens and tossed them up and down.

Keep in mind, the Antsy Lab Fidget Cube is the original. All the $3.99 ones are knockoffs in case you guys wanted to upkeep that bladeforums anti-knockoff stance.
