Is The Manix For Me?

Check out a Lone Wolf Harsey Ranger with a 4.75 inch blade. If you want a big folder this is it. S30V blade and comes with a nice sheath. I have a couple New in the Box that I will sell for $150. Model 14800.

I can't contact you if you don't accept emails...

Send me an email through the board please!

Regarding the Spyderco, I'm not a fan of the lockback because it usually required two hands, though I've learned to close my Spyderco with one hand by pushing the lock and then folding the blade on my thigh.

I can easily close a lock back onehanded, almost as fast a a liner or frame lock.

Take his arm off, that is well worth it. I think a lot of people havent had the opportunity to handle one of these. If you are after a stout/large folder for S.D this has to one of the top contenders.

I have played with a Manix for a week, and it is definitely a solid folder. Well built, smooth, and certainly well suited for hard use. I would not hesitate to recommend one. You would have to determine if the handle size and shape are good for you; I found it to have excellent ergonomics.

Well, not to throw any more confusion onto the matter (of those offered, for your stated purpose I'd go with the Rukus because of the Axis which is very easy to flip open); but I'd like to offer up a couple more:

Emerson Super CQC7
Emerson Super Commander
Emerson Super SOCFK
Emerson M-Wave
and the new Spyderco Endura 4 with the wave.

If you're looking for a definsive folder, EKI's really work out well. The Endura is also a very good choice since its got the good steel, conventional grind, and a VERY competetive price. If this knife is for defensive purposes, with utility only occurring every once in a while, then I'd rather save the weight and get something lighter. But then again, I carry a lot of crap with me on a daily basis.

Good luck on your search, and remember the hunt is more than half the fun!

The Manix is great. A bargain. It is big and beefy, but is still a great cutter, and a great *slicer*, which is something you can't say about many big, beefy knives. It is a great work knife if you want slicing ability in a beefy package.

I have handled a Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical Folder. Yes, the big one. It felt very stout. It is very large, making the Manix, Skirmish, and Rukus all feel small. Lockup was very good. But I have never used the knife. If you want a really big folder that isn't Cold Steel crap, it's one of the best choices, IMO.

I have a Skirmish, and it has tons of personality, but some minor faults. The lock is very stiff, and I have noticed this on all 4 Skirmishes I have handled. This can be a good thing, but it makes unlocking a chore. The titanium also shows dirt, ink, and scuffs very easily, making it not such a great dirty work knife. It is a strong, big, beefy folder that is also beautiful, but isn't as "all business" as the Manix. It isn't the most utilitarian knife you can buy, but it is very capable.

The Strider SNG and SMF are acclaimed... and sometimes called overrated. Never handled either, but I really want an SMF. In general they are considered tanks, but lack slicing ability. If you want something really tough and don't mind if you have to work a little harder to cut something (keeping in mind the wider edge is tougher), these might be for you. Especially the larger SMF. Expensive, though.

Handled a Rukus. Beefy and fairly classy. If you want easy opening and closing, this may be the one for you. It is much easier to open and close than any other knife I have mentioned.

Also look at the large Emersons.

Maybe the Benchmade 710 or 806 AFCK? They are great knives if they are big enough for you.

Depending on just how big your hands are, the Al Mar SERE 2000 and Spyderco Military might fit the bill as well.

Can't go wrong with any of these. I suggest you handle as many as possible to find what fits your hand. What is "really big" to you might just be a SERE 2000 to us. The smallish (in this company) Military might be big enough for you while something like the Lone Wolf Harsey is just rediculous big... bigger than you thought it would be.

One of my bosses at work once commented that my SERE 2000 was "a really, really huge knife". And he has bigger hands than me. When he asks for a really big knife, a SERE 2000 is what I would give him since he has never seen a Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical Folder.

p.s. I can flick a lockback closed much easier than a compression lock, and about equal to an Axis lock.

The Manix is a pretty simple and fast folder to open and close. To open, just grab the closed knife by its sides, with your four fingers on the clip side, and your thumb on the other side. Press the lock release with your index finger and flick.

Closing is even easier. Hold the open knife the same was as above, with the blade facing upward. Press the lock release with your index finger, and gravity will close the blade by itself.

Becuase the Manix's immense handle size, I find it as easy to open and close as the Axis lock on my BM 710HS.

More good info. I am still thinking about the Manix, but I must admit, less so now than when I initially posted. It looks like for the money, there is more competition I need to research and for a little more money, maybe some better choices. I have around $150.00 to spend and don't have to spend it all on this knife, but I can.

I am a big fan of the AXIS lock and used to think I liked the Rukus a lot, but I find I like it less and less the more I look at it. It just seems like one of those knives I would be worried about loosing or messing up, etc. Plus, I like a more utility type blade, one less "pointy" if that makes any sense. If I have to use this knife defensively, it won't be a stabbing type gesture, I will be slashing from concealment only and I don't know how well the Rukus would work for that. The blade shape of some of the Spydercos like the Manix seem to lend themselves better to this type of use.

I haven't said this because I didn't want to limit my options or keep people from giving me their opinions but I am not a big fan of "liner locks". I have had one or two (yes, good quality) fail and it scared me. Alot. What attracted me to the Manix was the lock.

Thanks once again and keep those opinions coming!

another vote for the manix. the lockback is solid and easily closed once you're used to it, which happens rapidly IMO.

How does the Endura 4 lock compare to the Manix lock? I can get the Endura for half the price of the Manix. Just curious.

Have a MAnix and love it. It is quite large. The Skirmish and T2 are almost too big for EDC in my opinion. I also don't like the beveled hole on the Skirmish - too hard to open.

Spyderco says the Manix has their strongest lock.

The Manix is a far stronger knife than the Endura. But if the Endura's strength will meet your wants and needs, then there isn't much need to spend the extra money (unless you want to).
