Is the Mule and the Sage program

Done, have not seen any new models in a while? I know that the last few Mules have sold a a lot slower and Spyderco still has inventory so I can understand them not wanting to commit to another run. But the Sage models seemed to be going strong after the 5 came out. Really like the different locks in the same format to try out locking styles.

Mule Team is now defunct from what I remember Sal suggesting. I dunno about sage though.

Mule team is done, there was some consideration to adding something similar as regular production for those who liked tinkering with handles etc. No idea if it'll end up happening.

Sage is said to have a frn model in the works, again, we'll see if it ends up happening.

Mule team is not done, per se.

Sal's words were "no new mules planned at this time" [emphasis mine].

If you read that carefully, it's more like the mule team is on hiatus. An extended leave perhaps.

But he explicitly leaves it open to resuming in the future, "if the demand is there" as he often says.

Hi Woodysone,

We still have a few Sage designs in-the-works.

sal
Sorry to see the end of mules but have to thank you for making it happen, I have leaned a lot about different steels. What the program really did for me was not to be afraid of putting handles on blades and have met a bunch of great people in the process. As for the Sage series, each one of the locks have been executed well and are great examples of what Spyderco is capable of.;):)

Thanx Woodysone,

The Mules were a fun project. I've come up with an number of unusual projects over the years, but most will have a life. Sprints are still going, but they are a bit different in that they are all disco'd models. The Sage project is still going and we have 2 different locks and a lite weight version in-the-works. The Chaparral project will run for a while as there are more options. The buffalo horn was nixed due to the inconsistency of the material, but there are also a number of Chaparrals in process. We're also trying to work with woods for the Chaps.

I hope we will see more mules some time in the future, but there's no use trying to dig up every possible steel just to keep it going, but if some new interesting steel pops up I hope we'll see a mule in it.

Also, in a sprint, we change something on the model so as not to hurt the collector value of the earlier piece.

Will miss sprints on regular production knives..got a Orange Rex 45 Millie in late yesterday and its already my favorite Millie.

We will still have the dealer exclusives.

I have a Chap inbound today, order from DLT a couple days ago. I couldn't say no to the recently discontinued Ti Stealth. The materials, and build quality for the $140 shipped while they're blowing out inventory was just too much for me to say no. You have no idea how stoked I am.

Cherish my Mule in 20CV, which I picked up last year at the factory store in Golden; it now lives in my daypack. Just wave it and a sausage falls into obedient slices. Hope to hear about Sal's new FB project in the near future.

Hi 19-3ben,

I think you will find it exceptional. In my opinion, it is one of my better designs.

So no more sprints of current production models like the Delica, Native 5, Para3, etc (at least for now) after the currently planned sprints like the V-TOKU2 Dragonfly and Stretch... Am I reading that correctly? Several people over on the Spyderco forums as well as a few here are hoping for confirmation/clarification.

I gotta say... I would pretty sad to find out that one of the two sources of trying out exotic steels on current production Spydercos is going away. Two of my favorite Spydercos of all time are sprint runs of current production knives (the HAP40 Wharncliffe Delica and REX45 Para3).

Sorry to see the Mule Team project end, but it has been a fun ride. I should have enough of them to last the rest of my life (it would probably take that long to get handles on all of them).

Boy you're not kiddin'!!!!! That's one hell of a great design. I've gotten to the point where 75% of the time that i get a new knife, I can take it out of the box and know immediately if it's going to be a winner, or if it goes up on the exchange. Most go on the exchange, but every so often, I open the box, and immediately throw the box away because I know the knife has already found spot in the permanent collection. That is this Chappy.

Wearing it today in suit pants. It's classy, slim, and just big enough to do anything I could really need a knife to do. It's definitely got me looking hard at the FRN model as well to have one for more causal wear.

What an excellent blend of features.

Thank you many times over, Sal Glesser Sal Glesser .

I tell you what, sal. I despise back locks. But my OG s30v carbon fiber chaparral is so damn good despite the backlock that it's one of my most carried. I love how thin the blade is. It just plain slices better than any other knife I have and the size is perfect. That thing with even a liner lock would be perfection.
